Kat's father's last name was Gutierrez, but when her parents got married, he took his wife's name, hoping to avoid discrimination for his children based on their last name. Kat is half-Mexican and half-white. Kat did not want for much growing up but did not necessarily understand how privileged she was. She went to public school but mostly made friends with those of the same social status as her. She excelled in tennis and in school. She was popular at school and had a lot of friends. She did not share with her friends the turmoil at home. Her parents fought constantly but would not divorce because their image was important. When they drank, sometimes these fights became physical on both sides. Their large circle of friends would never know this from the happy front they put on during the many lavish parties they would throw. Kat went to Wilmington University on a scholarship and was inspired by her treatment during a tennis injury to study to become a physical therapist. She met her best friend Amanda freshman year when they were placed as roommates in the dorms. In her sophomore year, she met her current boyfriend, Dane.
