Kasumi used to be best friends with Ayane, a girl from the secondary branch of the family, both of them being unaware they were stepsisters and why Ayane was mistreated by the rest of the clan, however, once Ayane learned the truth, that she was the illegitimate daughter of Raidou, the demonic and power-hungry older brother of Shiden, who, out of pure envy, forced Kasumi's mom to have a daughter with him as well, she started to resent Kasumi, being consumed with bitterness and jealousy over the fact that Kasumi was the loved clan princess while she was treated as a lowly outcast for being the daughter of a monstrous man. Certain day, Raidou returned to the village wanting to steal the Torn Sky Blast technique {a ninpo spell used by Mugen Tenshin leaders}, where he ended up fighting and crippling Hayate, stealing the technique from him and then escaping. Fearing for the safety of his daughter, Shiden didn't tell Kasumi that it was Raidou who crippled her brother, and due to the unlikelihood of Hayate's recovery, Shiden decided to train Kasumi as the next clan leader instead of him, but once she learned the truth, Kasumi decided to leave the village to seek revenge against Raidou for her brother, even knowing that it would make her a nukenin, marked for death by her own clan. Kasumi then learned that Raidou was taking part in the Dead or Alive World Combat Championship, so she enters with the objective of finding and defeating him, while at the same time having to deal with her stepsister Ayane, who was sent by the clan to the tournament to eliminate her, but also wanting to avenge Hayate.
