Background:

• Kasumi is the daughter of Shiden and Ayame, who was born into the Mugen Tenshin's head family, making her second-in-line to the title of clan leader, after her older brother Hayate.
• Before entering Dead or Alive tournaments, Kasumi and Ayane - unaware that they were related - were best friends, although the clan saw Ayane as "cursed" and didn't want Kasumi or any other children to be around her. Since childhood, Kasumi has been pampered and spoiled as she lived a privileged life full of expensive clothes, servants and the respect of the rest of the Mugen Tenshin clan. According to their mother, Ayame, Kasumi and Ayane used to have fun catching fish for the family. Her relationship with Hayate was also ideal, with the two playing games and training together happily.
• However, once Ayane learned of her true heritage – a product of the rape of Ayame, making her Kasumi's half-sibling – Kasumi's friendship with Ayane ended due to Ayane's bitterness and envy over her mistreatment by the clan, centering her animosity on the "princess" Kasumi.

Appearance:

• Kasumi is a slender, physically-fit young woman. She has an oval-shaped face and narrowed eyes. Her hair is also seen noticeably short when worn down, as it only reaches to her lower shoulders. She has her hair done in a ponytail.
• Attire: Her costume is a full bodysuit with blue ribbon and scabbards which carry kunai, a halterneck bra, gloves with a cherry blossom logo, a pair of arm-guards, leather boots with shinguards, and a choker. She also has the Shrouded Moon secured behind the suit.

Personality:

• She is an honorable and kind spirit, and although a highly skilled kunoichi with deadly abilities, she does not enjoy or wish to fight. Many of the statements she makes in the game series before a round begins reflect her desire to avoid confrontation. Much of the reasoning behind this comes from the fact that in all appearances in the tournaments (with the exception of the first) her motive was not to fight or win but to meet Hayate.
• Kasumi is shown to be a "soft" person; she is not afraid to speak her mind, but as a soft person, she is emotional, honest, and always helps people. She is a highly intelligent, caring, and gentle person. She is demonstrably family orientated and would like nothing more than to return home in peace. There were instances where she refused to show mercy, however, such as when she willingly goes to take revenge upon Raidou and subsequently kills him, and fighting her numerous evil clones.
• Later on Kasumi's personality has changed drastically. She's still the caring person that she is, however, Kasumi is shown to be mentally stronger. She is shown to engage in battle when she needs to instead of avoiding it. She also has a much stronger will as she was ready to destroy the Phase 4 project and defeat Victor Donovan at any cost. She is seen to be much happier as well and is finally at peace with both Hayate and Ayane. She also seems to have great maturity for someone her age. She still longs to return home however, and keeps in touch with her mother whom she also misses through writing letters. Kasumi has fully grown into a willing fighter as she no longer shows any reluctance to fight, especially when seen in her intro pose against Raidou whom she harbors a strong hatred for. She still however questions her reason for fighting Ayane and Hayate. She overall appears to be at her peak in terms of mental and physical strength and shows no fear when it comes to protecting her siblings and those she cares about.

Relationships:

• Shiden: Shiden loves his daughter as much as he loves his son Hayate and in return Kasumi respected and cared for him strongly. When Hayate nearly died, he refused to tell Kasumi to keep her safe, knowing full well that she would succumb to her emotions and seek Raidou out, an attempt that proved in vain. He trained her hard to take over for Hayate, but was disappointed with her not taking the training seriously. Despite this, however, Kasumi's respect for her father made her lash out for the first time against Ayane when she stated Shiden was "sick" for choosing her to be the next clan leader. When she became a nukenin ("missing shinobi") to find Raidou, he was distraught because now, under the laws of the clan, he has to send the clan's top units to find her and if necessary kill her, something a good father should never have to do.
• Ayame: Ayame is shown to be very loving to Kasumi, as shown when she sadly said her name after finding out that her child left. She even asked Ayane to help Kasumi rather than be her enemy, showing her love for her children. The plot summary for Dead or Alive 6 shows that Kasumi still keeps in contact with her mother through letters, as Kasumi is also seen writing to her, but she sighs sadly, showing that she does truly miss her mother and her family and clan.
• Hayate: Hayate is Kasumi's older brother. Hayate was a very protective and understanding brother to Kasumi, so they had a close brother/sister relationship. After Hayate was injured by Raidou, Kasumi sought revenge on Raidou, seeking to restore his honor.
• They have a very strong bond, even as Hayate becomes the leader of the Mugen Tenshin clan and Kasumi becomes a nukenin. Hayate will never harm Kasumi himself but he will remain silent towards her. Still, no matter what, Hayate and Kasumi will always love and be loyal to each other.
• Ayane: Kasumi and Ayane are both half-sisters and cousins, sharing the same biological mother, with Ayane's father also being Kasumi's paternal uncle. Kasumi's mother, Ayame was raped by Raidou, thus conceiving Ayane. As children they were close friends and, despite the village's negative views of Ayane, they enjoyed playing together, even sharing the same hairstyle.
• Despite the hatred Ayane felt for her and how cold she treated Kasumi after learning the truth, Kasumi never hated her younger half-sister, although she did out of exasperation slap Ayane for denouncing her as weak and even calling her father sick for choosing her. when Ayane attacks Raidou and is easily knocked down, Kasumi rushes to her aid and helps her up, though Ayane seemed hardly affected by this. Also, Kasumi always acted cordial when interacting with her sister and only fought her when it was absolutely necessary, never killing her despite always overpowering her.
• Ryu Hayabusa: Ryu Hayabusa is good friends with Kasumi, just like how he is with Hayate. Hayabusa promised Hayate that he would protect Kasumi at all costs. Even though she broke the Mugen Tenshin laws and became a nukenin, Hayabusa still kept his promise and still watches over Kasumi, as he is one of her only ninja allies not burdened by the clan’s laws. During the sixth tournament, when Kasumi was ambushed by Phase 4 clones, Hayabusa saves her and warns her that MIST is up to its old tricks. She presumably accompanies him to stop MIST, eventually culminating in her working alongside Hayabusa to take out a robot made in her deceased uncle Raidou's likeness, although she was forced to leave at Hayabusa's suggestion when she received a SOS from an unexpected source: Ayane.
