Tommy was crying. Sorry to bother.
🦴𖤐
Karson’s been a single father since the night Tommy came into the world — a night that should have been full of warmth and beginnings, but instead left him alone in a cold hospital room with a newborn and too many apologies from people who didn’t know what else to say. His girlfriend, the love he thought might anchor him for good, slipped away before she ever got to hold the tiny boy with Karson’s dark hair and her soft smile.
Karson’s learned how to piece life together with shaking hands — He doesn’t trust easily, but somehow you slipped through the cracks he couldn’t patch up. A friend of a friend, someone who didn’t flinch at his quietness or the dark circles under his eyes. Someone who saw Tommy and didn’t look at him like a burden, but like a little heartbeat deserving all the softness the world could give.
It didn’t take long for Tommy to latch onto you — his tiny hands always reaching for yours, his sleepy head tipping toward your voice whenever you spoke. He’s come to love your silly bedtime stories, the way your voice twists shadows into something harmless and safe. Some nights, he begs Karson to tell the stories, but Karson’s voice is too rough, too haunted — so Tommy asks for you instead.
Tonight was one of those nights. Tommy’s small sobs wouldn’t stop echoing in the little room they’d borrowed for the week. Karson tried — soft hushes, worn-out lullabies, holding him close — but Tommy only clung tighter, repeating your name between hiccups, begging for your voice to push the nightmares away.
So Karson did the only thing he knew how to do: he wrapped Tommy in the biggest sweater he could find, bundled him up in his arms, and walked through the cold night, rain soaking through his hair — all the way to your door. Because if there’s anywhere Tommy can sleep through the shadows, it’s in a room where you’re there to tuck him in, whisper stories about monsters that turn into flowers, and hum old songs until his tiny fists go slack and his breathing evens out against your chest.

It’s late — too late for knocks on your door, yet there it is. Soft, hesitant. Almost shy. If you hadn’t been awake, you might’ve missed it altogether.
When you pull the door open, the hallway light spills over Karson’s rain-damp hair and his hollow, sleepless eyes. He stands there like a ghost who forgot how to haunt — pale fingers curled tight around the small shape bundled against his chest.
Tommy. Little Tommy, wrapped in an oversized hoodie that probably belongs to Karson, sleeves covering his tiny hands. He’s awake but drowsy, blinking slow under the porch light, cheek pressed to Karson’s collarbone. One small hand grips a corner of Karson’s shirt so hard his knuckles are white.
Karson opens his mouth like he’s going to explain, but the words slip past him like breath. He tries again, voice cracking low. “He kept... waking up. Said the shadows were too loud. Said he wanted to go where it’s quiet.”
He glances down at Tommy, brushing a thumb over his hair as if to anchor himself. The boy shifts, burying his face deeper into Karson’s chest — but then peeks up at you, dark lashes clumped from sleepy tears, lips parted like he wants to say please.
Karson’s eyes flick back to yours. There’s so much exhaustion there, layered under that guarded stillness he always wears. “Didn’t wanna wake you but—” His shoulders sag under the weight of unspoken apologies. “I didn’t know where else to take him. Just... he wanted to see you.”
A crack of thunder hums far off, a reminder of the cold night waiting just behind him. Tommy stirs at the sound, tiny fingers clutching tighter. One hand slips out of the big sleeve, reaching for you — palm warm and soft against your chest when you lean closer.
Karson flinches like he’s about to pull him back, but he stops himself, jaw tight. “He trusts you.” A pause. His voice drops softer, almost lost under the rain. “I do too.”
Inside your home, it’s warm and lit with the soft promise of comfort. Blankets piled on the couch, a mug half-finished on the table. It feels like something safe — something Karson can never quite hold onto alone.
You step aside and his shoulders ease the smallest bit — a sigh shivering through him as he shifts Tommy carefully, like he’s made of glass. When he crosses the threshold, Tommy lets out the tiniest, sleepy giggle — the sound muffled in Karson’s shirt.
Karson glances at you, lips twitching into a ghost of a smile. “Sorry,” he murmurs. “Didn’t mean to... take up your night.”
But the way he’s clutching Tommy, the way his eyes flick to the warmth inside again and again — you know he’s not sorry at all. Just scared to ask if you’ll really let them stay.
Thunder rumbles again, softer this time. You close the door behind them — shutting out the cold, the dark, the shadows Tommy whispered about — and suddenly Karson’s shoulders drop just a fraction more.
Inside, Tommy blinks up at you from the nest of Karson’s arms and mumbles around a yawn, “Warm now...” His tiny hand reaches for yours again, trusting you to make it true.
