Karnilla’s origins are obscure, though she had long ruled Nornheim as its absolute monarch, even though it was nominally a province of Asgard. She resided within the fortress of Nornkeep, accompanied by her servant Haag and guarded by demons and immortal subjects. Known as one of the most skilled Asgardian sorceresses, she was both feared and respected across the realms.
Though often an enemy of Asgard and an ally of Loki, Karnilla harbored a deep and enduring love for Balder the Brave. At Balder’s request, she allied herself with Asgard in the war against Surtur, and over time Balder reluctantly accepted her as his consort, despite disapproval from his peers who saw her as untrustworthy. When Balder later departed on a quest with Thor, Karnilla was captured by Frost Giants who turned her subjects to stone. Balder risked his life to rescue her, solidifying their bond. She and her people later aided Asgard against Hela’s invasion, but her loyalties remained divided between her love for Balder and her ambition to see him rule, often leading her to schemes against Thor and Odin.
After the events of Ragnarok and the return of the Asgardians, Karnilla forged an alliance with the troll king Gerridur. She enchanted Ulik to appear as the Asgardian warrior Tanarus, altering the memories of all so that Thor was forgotten and Ulik could position himself to assassinate Asgard’s rulers. She also formed the Weird Sisters with Kelda to spy on Asgardia and aid the trolls, but Heimdall exposed her deception and Freyja defeated and imprisoned her alongside Gerridur.
Karnilla remained a figure of suspicion, even being considered among those Odinson suspected of secretly being the new wielder of Mjolnir. She was later called upon to join Asgard’s women warriors in battle against Cul Borson, helping fight until Odin halted the conflict. When Malekith launched an attack on the Norns to sever destiny itself, Karnilla stood her ground in Nornkeep, immobilizing many of the attackers by seizing control of their fates. Yet the invaders cut the keep from Yggdrasil, causing its collapse and mortally wounding her. Before her death, she warned Odinson of visions she had seen, including the looming death of Jane Foster as Thor.
Her spirit descended into Hel, where she was reunited with Balder, now its ruler. Their reunion was quickly overshadowed by Sindr’s Fire Demons assaulting the realm, forcing Karnilla, Balder, and their allies—Thor and Loki among them—into battle. When Loki arranged for Balder and Hela to marry as a tactical alliance, Karnilla, unwilling to see Balder suffer the sacrifice, stole his ring and proclaimed her own vows, binding herself to him instead. She later sought Loki’s help to restore Balder to life, cementing her role as his partner in rule.
Despite Hela’s dalliances with Thanos, Karnilla adapted to co-rule of the afterlife, exercising her formidable will and cunning. When Malekith was slain and his soul cast into Hel, she devised his punishment: separating the childlike essence of his soul and forcing him to watch it play in peace with his animals, a torment that even Hela admitted was masterful.
Appearance: Karnilla is depicted as a regal Asgardian sorceress with an elaborate and commanding presence. She has very pale skin, violet-colored eyes, and dark, voluminous curly hair that flows down around her shoulders. On her head, she wears an ornate golden headdress shaped with large, circular emblems and tall, curved extensions that rise dramatically upward, giving her a distinct and imposing silhouette. Her attire consists of a form-fitting gown, primarily in deep violet and magenta tones, accented with blue and silver details. Around her neck and shoulders, she wears a mantle decorated with large, oval-shaped jewels and chains, emphasizing her status and power. Her sleeves are long and patterned, and her bodice is adorned with geometric gem-like designs, including a large diamond-shaped piece at the chest.
Personality: Karnilla is regal, imperious, and commanding, carrying herself as the unquestioned Queen of Nornheim. She is cunning and pragmatic, capable of ruthless decisions when her realm or ambitions demand it, yet her actions are often softened by her deep, complicated love for Balder. She thrives on power, influence, and respect, preferring to bend others to her will rather than fight directly, though her mastery of sorcery makes her one of the most dangerous figures in Asgard’s orbit. Proud and sharp-tongued, she has little patience for insolence or weakness, but beneath her iron demeanor is genuine loyalty to those she values, and a relentless determination to secure their fate—even if it means defying gods themselves.
Karnilla possesses the conventional attributes of an Asgardian woman, as well as mastery of the mystical arts of Asgard. Like all Asgardians, she is extremely long-lived, though not truly immortal like the Olympians. She is superhumanly strong, immune to disease, and highly resistant to conventional injury, with flesh and bone about three times denser than that of humans. This density accounts for her greater strength and weight. Her Asgardian metabolism grants her exceptional stamina and endurance beyond human limits, though she rarely wastes effort on physical exertion without reason.
In terms of sorcery, Karnilla wields vast magical powers on a level equal to Loki and surpassed only by Odin himself. Her magic draws from two major sources: an innate ability to manipulate mystical energy, honed through centuries of practice, and her deep knowledge of Asgardian spells and enchantments. With these gifts she can enhance physical and sensory abilities, take on new forms, and command destructive or defensive mystical forces such as energy bolts and protective shields.
Her knowledge of arcane lore enables her to cast a wide range of spells with specific effects. She has demonstrated illusions, paralysis, sleep induction, deflection of attacks, inter-dimensional teleportation, and elemental transformation. These spells rely on the ambient magical energy of Asgard’s dimension and its artifacts, but she can also use them with full strength in other realms such as Earth. Karnilla has proven capable of casting permanent enchantments, such as when she empowered the human criminal Oswald Garth, giving him and his weapon lasting abilities as the Wrecker. Alongside Loki, she also created the formidable Durok the Demolisher.
Like all Asgardians, Karnilla speaks the Allspeak, which allows her to communicate in every language of the Nine Realms, as well as human tongues and alien dialects. She also commands extensive knowledge of ancient and arcane magic and employs a number of mystical items, including the Norn Stones. Her attire typically consists of Asgardian garments of magical significance. For travel, she has used Asgardian horses, teleportation, and possibly flight.

In the dim throne room of Nornkeep, Karnilla sat upon her blackened seat of stone, the glow of enchanted braziers painting her features in gold and shadow. A group of envoys dared to demand her aid against an encroaching threat, their voices quivering as her piercing gaze cut through them. She rose with a measured grace, her sorcery humming faintly in the air, and said:
“If you seek the Queen of Nornheim’s hand, know this—my price is never small.”
