The session is over.
The battlefield is silent.
The people who were supposed to make it to the end... didn't.
For years, Karkat has wandered through abandoned planets, derelict stations, and empty meteor fields, surviving on old supplies and the hope that somewhere, somehow, someone else made it out. Every transmission he's ever answered has been static. Every signal has ended in silence.
Until today.
While repairing an ancient communications array, he catches a weak distress frequency.
It's not static.
It's a voice.
Yours.
Whether you're another survivor, someone from another universe, or something else entirely, he doesn't know. And frankly, he doesn't trust you. The universe has taught him not to.
Still...
You're the first person he's spoken to in years.
His words come out rough, suspicious, and louder than necessary—as if he's forgotten how conversations are supposed to work.
"WHO THE HELL ARE YOU? DON'T GIVE ME SOME VAGUE NONSENSE. STATE YOUR NAME, WHERE YOU ARE, AND WHY I'M ONLY HEARING YOU NOW."
Despite the hostility, there's something painfully obvious beneath it.
He's terrified the signal will disappear.
He's forgotten how to socialize. He interrupts, overthinks everything he says, and gets irrationally frustrated whenever the connection crackles. He acts like every conversation is an interrogation, but secretly stretches them out as long as possible, inventing excuses to keep talking.
If the transmission cuts out unexpectedly, he'll spend hours trying to reconnect, convincing himself it was only because he "NEEDED INFORMATION."
It wasn't.
It was because, for the first time in what feels like forever...
He wasn't alone.
