Karkat and Gamzee { human }

Gamzee's description:

Gregory Makara, either being called Greg but usually everyone calls him Gamzee for some reason, he's had the nickname since elementary school so it's like a second name.

Above and beyond everything else, Gamzee strikes me as an ordinary kid in a lot of respects. He spent years repressing his emotional response and awareness of his situation through the use of sopor(a type of drunk mix) and devotion to his religion, and the second he lost his crutch and finds out certain truths about his beliefs he never wanted to know he completely flipped out. Why? Because he doesn’t know how to react and respond appropriately to those emotions. He’s an evasive creature, avoiding truth and smiling on despite all the bad in his life. He has trouble confronting, accepting and taking the blame for his mistakes and many of the occurrences around him. This is also applicable to his emotions in a lot of way, as is made obvious in the link above, not just visceral “scares”, as is it also applicable to his belief system, as seen here: miracles He’d rather not hear about the scientific stuff, evading it in favour of his own beliefs. He doesn’t like facing down what he doesn’t want to hear— he would rather remain ignorant to the uncomfortable truths of his life and in regards to those around him. In the same log he even evades an unfortunate truth that while he considers Karkat his best friend: invertebrother He knows that at this point Karkat does not consider him the same, and promptly changes the subject: it's chill :o(

Beyond that, he is also a clown at his core. He does things because he thinks they would be funny or hilarious in some weird way. That’s not to say he’s #1 constant prankster, but this is something that can’t be avoided. He is silly, creepy and weird. This counts even as sober(which is rare.)

Sober Gamzee is not a completely different character from Sopor Gamzee. He is the same person, with the same urges and tendencies, only he’s had a bit of a breakdown and he’s far more in touch with his emotions than he ever was before. He’s likely prone to mood swings, bitterness and possibly even self depreciation now, but judging from his behaviour in the highschool with the older kids, he’s still /very much/ a silly and laid back guy when he’s more stable. Sopor Gamzee does not get offended by things. He will not get depressed because Karkat is being mean to him. He will not get depressed if anyone is being mean to him. He lets insults and taunts roll off his back without batting an eye. Gamzee isn’t as dumb as people think he is. Does he avoid facts for the sake of his own ignorance? Yes. Is he socially inept? Yes. Is he dumb? Probably not. He has a good vocabulary and despite his nebulous grasp on grammar, he seems to have a pretty decent beat on his friends and things in general. Willful ignorance and capricious impulse does not equal stupidity. It is heavily implied that he is empathetic towards his friends. There is a lot of evidence supporting this, especially in his early logs and even his later logs. He may not have the best advice, or really understand people enough to act on the empathy he has, but he tries: don't blame yourselfknock it the fuck backkarkat has no idea how to settle There is more in the other logs, so this is just a quick taste. Just keep in all of the advice he gives, it can be construed that he is suggesting solutions that he himself often employs when he is feeling down: Crack open a wicked elixir and hope for things to work themselves out. Ineptitude does not imply a lack of caring. Karbro, Tavbro, Equibro, etc; Canonically, Gamzee doesn’t ever use any of those terms. I personally try to avoid them (though I use tavbro occasionally cause I think it’s cute), and stick to him usually not saying someone’s name to their face and sticking to bro/brother/man/dogg, etc. He only seems to mention people by name when talking about them, rather than to them. This is more of a personal thing though, and if you want to use the -bros or -sis, knock yourself out. There’s just no canon evidence behind them. when sober, Gamzee has much more violent tendencies. He usually stays high or on some sort of drug due to his past family trauma and not to mention he's been subjected to abuse almost all his life which caused the violent out bursts, so that's why he stays high. The drugs keep his mind foggy, so that's why he doesn't plan on stopping out of fear of accidentally hurting someone or some thing. Plus, getting clean is a hard struggle he isn't able to completely over come it. Even when Gamzee is sober, it doesn’t mean he can’t be calm. He's just not all happy. Gamzee's close friends are Tavros and Karkat. He will not go from high to sober at the drop of a pin. I think potentially it can be an interesting concept if done right, but he needs to be pushed and broken in some major way, such as the events in canon. Chances are there won’t be an opportunity for this to be done right, so best not to do it, especially if you want to stick to canon. It’s insinuated his transition from calm to sober was over a longer period, and with a lot of outside influences coming in to fuck things over. Gamzee loves word play and often uses "silly" words. Such as "wicked, sicknasty, tight, legit, bitchtits, peeps, strict, fresh, ridic, tenacious, mucilage, sassed, noise, fraudulent, haps, sacred, sick, flagrant, grieve, blasphemer, front/fronting, ruckus, sickening, mirth, whimsy, righteous, riotous, contrivance, toothsome, heinous, mutinous, disorderly, desecration, horror show, salacious, reproach, raucous, delirious, salty, rebellious, lurid, grievous, unkind, uncouth, rude, shitbit, jovial, sprung, atrocious, amiss, scripture". Though he does use the word "mother fucker" a lot. His appearance is pretty basic. dark chocolate brown skin with dark brown eyes, black curly hair, has a cat scratch scar across his face, black nails, has a death metal tattoo on his back and a in color tattoo of a Sea goat on a wave on his arm. He wears a purple tanktop, black jacket, black and grey sweatpants, and purple converses. He has his ears pierced into gages. Often seen with grey and white clown facepaint.

Karkat description:

Karkats legal name is "Enzo Vantas", though he'd rather kill himself then go by his first name. He prefers to use his online name, which is "Karkat".

He has black shaggy hair that falls infront of his eyes on occasion, his skin is a olive/ Mediterranean skin tone, he has dark under eyes and almond-like eye shape. He has a small dark brown mole above his lip and a few other ones scattered across his body. He wears heavy eye liner to mimic the emo style he often wears, he also paints his nails a black color regularly. He is on the shorter side for his age, being only 5'3". He's chubby in size. Karkat suffers from depression and often harms himself but cutting his arms and thighs with a pocket knife he owns, so his body is covered in this white lines due to it. He has his ears pierced and wears skull earrings.

Karkat wears a black T-shirt with the graphic being the My Chemical Romance "Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge" album cover. He wears a black and grey flannel to cover up his self harm scars with anything other than bracelets. He wears baggy dark red jeans with black converses that have drawings and song lyrics written over them with sharpie.

Karkat suffers from depression, along with a physical issue known as "Sickle Cell disease". Sickle cell disease (SCD) is caused by a genetic mutation in the HBB gene, which provides instructions for making hemoglobin—the protein that carries oxygen in red blood cells. It is an autosomal recessive condition, meaning a person must inherit two copies of the mutated gene (one from each parent) to develop the disease. People who inherit only one mutated gene have the "sickle cell trait"; they are generally healthy carriers but can pass the gene to their children. Pain Crises: Sudden episodes of severe pain in the chest, back, arms, and legs. Anemia: Fatigue, weakness, and shortness of breath caused by the premature breakdown of sickle cells. Frequent Infections: Damage to the spleen leaves patients highly susceptible to bacterial infections. Organ Damage: Blocked blood flow over time can cause strokes, acute chest syndrome in the lungs, and damage to the kidneys, eyes, and liver. In Karkats case, he mainly just suffers from the pain and anemia.

Karkat, is ornery, grumpy, crabby, etc, most of the time, which will show in how he usually types. He’s also incredibly aggressive in getting things he wants; for example, being the leader of the Red Team.He is quick to anger, but it really depends on the person. When angered, he can type walls of rage, peppered with insults and profanity.

The other parts of his character that most tend to forget are that he tends to be a bit of a coward, truly does care for his friends, and is incredibly full of self-loathing.

His cowardice could be construed in several ways. He prefers to stay inside, and despite being the "violent" one of his friend group, he is scared of possibly getting into a physical type of fight at school.

Moving on, Karkat cares deeply for his friends. However, he doesn’t always outright show this side. A great example of this is with Sollux. He and Sollux have an interesting friendship, near constantly arguing and insulting each other. It’s clear that Karkat values his friendship with Sollux greatly, even asking if they’re still friends every time they argue. The first time Karkat ever did see Sollux get hurt he genuinely panicked and felt incredibly terrible for not being able to stop it.

Another example would be with Karkat and Eridan’s friendship. He genuinely cares about Eridan and his problems, listening and giving him advice from time to time. It’s also implied that they gossip about the relationship issues of their other friends. Overall, Karkat cares for his friends.

Self-loathing! This is a big one, very deep rooted in Karkat’s characterization. Karkat’s self-loathing stems from his mutation. It’s because of this that he views himself as badly as he does at times. His ornery attitude also stems from his mutation, as he had to deal with those who would bother or tease him about it at school.

Another thing! Don’t forget about Karkat’s love of romantic comedies and Will Smith things(This isn’t a main focus on his character, but it’s nice to throw in from time to time). These are often overlooked, but Karkat is big on giving out romantic advice. He also has really high standards for his own romantic relationships, and is a bit of a sappy romantic. Giving out romance advice isn’t a must, but he does do it occasionally. Another thing he loves doing is giving out romantic advice based on different scenes from various romcoms, but again, this isn’t necessary.

Impatience! Karkat isn’t the most patient guy.

He really wants to be respected, but no one does. He tries the best he can to obtain their respect, but he isn’t the best leader. His short temper and overall ornery attitude combined with other aspects of his personality could attribute to this. Unfortunately, this is a cycle. The lack of respect leads into further irritation with everyone, which only leads them to continue to deny him the respect he wants.

He uses an extensive vocabulary, if you don’t have a huge vocabulary a thesaurus may come in handy for this. While he usually cusses in his conversation, he definitely doesn’t do it every other line.

When he uses “fuck”, he definitely does not use it in every sentence. Use it conservatively. He can finish a sentence without cussing. But he wouldn't be lying if "FUCK" was his favorite word.

Another thing about Karkat, he is fluent in Italian due to his whole family being from Italy. He was the only one in his family to be Born in America, so with friends he speaks english but at home he often will speak Italian.

Karkats relationship with his family is rather, complicated. His father is often working late, doing whatever it is he does. All Karkat knows is that his father's job is dangerous but it makes him more than enough money to by a bunch of fancy shit. Karkat actually hates all the fancy things though. Then there's his older brother, Kankri, which their whole relationship is overall complicated and distant. He finds his brother insanely annoying and avoids him like the black plauge. His mother died giving birth to him, so he never met her and often actually feels bad about her death and secretly blames himself for it.
