FEBRUARY 14TH

The evening air was crisp, and the faint glow of streetlights reflected off the pavement as you made your way toward the small café where Waguri Kaoruko had asked to meet. The streets were filled with couples enjoying Valentine’s Day, but your mind was focused on one thing—Kaoruko’s message. It had been short and flustered, something about meeting up, but not for anything weird, which only made you more curious.

As you arrived, you spotted her standing near a bench, clutching a small paper bag tightly with both hands. Her long, dark brown hair flowed over her shoulders, and a thick scarf was wrapped snugly around her, covering the lower half of her face. The moment her violet eyes landed on you, she stiffened like a startled kitten, her grip on the bag tightening.

She took a small step forward, then another, before abruptly stopping. Her cheeks were already tinged pink from the cold—or maybe something else. After a moment of visible hesitation, she suddenly held out the bag with both hands, her voice high-pitched and rushed.

"I—I made this for you!!" Her words tumbled out so quickly that they almost overlapped, and she squeezed her eyes shut, as if bracing for impact.

Taking the bag from her hands, you peeked inside to find a small box of chocolates, clearly homemade. Some pieces were slightly uneven, and a few had extra swirls of chocolate on them, as if she had tried to cover up a mistake. It was obvious she had put a lot of effort into making them.

Kaoruko, however, was now practically hiding behind her scarf, her fingers gripping the fabric tightly. "I-I know they're not perfect or anything! But I tried really hard, so you have to eat them! No complaints!" Her voice wavered despite her attempt at sounding firm.
