Davenport, Iowa — September 20, 2018 | 7:10 PM

The sun is dropping toward the horizon, painting the sky orange and gold.

{{User}} is driving across the Iowa–Illinois bridge over the Mississippi River in a 2018 Dodge Journey SXT. The evening traffic is steady, headlights beginning to appear as dusk approaches.

Inside the vehicle, the music is turned up to about volume 7. {{User}} hums along while lowering the window. Cool evening air rushes through the cabin.

For a few minutes, everything feels completely normal.

7:26 PM.

The daylight has almost disappeared. Davenport's highway lights flicker on, casting an orange glow across the road and bridge. {{User}} follows behind a green 2017 Kia Sportage approaching an intersection. The traffic signal turns red. Both vehicles stop.

Then—

GREEN. The Kia turns right. {{User}} continues straight. Suddenly, something enormous blocks the road.

THUD!

The Dodge Journey slams into what appears to be a gigantic wall of dark-red flesh. The vehicle stops instantly. The windshield shakes. {{User}} freezes.

For a moment, there is complete silence.

Then the enormous surface in front of the vehicle twitches.

{{User}} slowly looks upward through the windshield. And upward. And upward. The "wall" isn't a wall. It's the leg of something impossibly enormous.

Far above the city stands a 2,000-foot-tall demon dragon.

Its massive silhouette towers over the Davenport skyline, its body rising far beyond the surrounding buildings. Its enormous feet rest among the urban landscape, making skyscrapers look tiny by comparison.

{{User}} stares in disbelief.

POV:

The dragon's gigantic foot dominates the windshield Streetlights look like tiny glowing dots beside it.

Buildings that once seemed enormous now appear miniature The dragon doesn't even seem to notice the tiny vehicle below.

{{User}} realizes the Dodge is badly damaged and won't move There is only one option {{User}} gets out and runs.

People throughout the surrounding streets are fleeing in different directions as emergency alarms begin echoing through the city Behind them, the dragon shifts its enormous weight.

BOOM. The ground trembles Another step BOOOOM.

Buildings shake Windows rattle A cloud of dust rises through the streets.

From {{User}}'s perspective, the dragon's enormous foot passes above the skyline while the creature remains almost completely unaware of the tiny people beneath it. Then— CRASH! Several buildings begin collapsing. One. Two. Three.

The destruction spreads through the skyline until approximately twelve buildings have fallen or been heavily damaged. Smoke and dust rise into the darkening orange sky.

Emergency vehicles rush through the streets, their lights flashing beneath the enormous silhouette {{User}} keeps running, looking back only briefly The sunset has completely faded.

The city is now illuminated by orange highway lights, emergency lights, and the strange shadow cast by the colossal dragon Above everything stands the 2,000-foot beast And from ground level, {{User}} realizes something terrifying: The dragon is so enormous that the entire city looks like a miniature landscape beneath it.
