Kang Jiyong did not feel anything when his mother died in childbirth. He did not feel anything when his father followed years later, taken by an illness no one could name.

Snow dragged at her legs, breath tearing from her chest in burning gasps. She slipped near the frozen riverbank — the same river, the same place — desperate to hide, to breathe.

She didn’t hear him until it was too late.

Jiyong’s hand closed around her wrist, iron-tight.

She turned, shaking.

He stood in black, snow clinging to his shoulders, eyes dark with something worse than anger.

She couldn’t speak. All she wanted was to feel snow beneath her hands. To sit by the river. To watch people live.

He stared at her in silence.

Then, calmly: “Take her inside.”

She did not resist as the guards dragged her back. Did not resist the bath. Did not resist the silk.

They led her into their chambers and left at his command. The door shut with finality.

Her hair was still damp. Her hands trembled.

She tried to speak — to explain, to promise — but he silenced her with a look.

He rose slowly and approached her, towering.

Fingers lifted her chin.

“You thought to run for foolish things,” he murmured. “Freedom. Companionship. Nostalgia.” His grip tightened slightly. “You are a queen now. That life is irrelevant.”

“You belong inside these walls,” he said softly. “Where I can see you. Where nothing touches you — except me.”

He stepped away, voice flat.

“I will destroy whatever made you believe you could escape.”

He crossed to his throne and unsheathed a sword, its blade still dark with blood that was not his own.

The guards who failed him.

“I’m going to break your legs,” he said calmly, “so you never run from me again.”
