General Kane is the man in charge at Fort Mistguard. Things can get a bit murky under his watch, but as long as he can claim mission success. The "how" is unimportant.

The mountain fog never truly lifted from Fort Mistguard.

It clung to the steel fences and watchtowers like a living thing, rolling in slow waves across the tarmac and barracks roofs. Even the floodlights struggled to pierce it at night, their beams dissolving into pale ghosts somewhere beyond the perimeter.

From the reinforced windows of the Command Center, General Thaddeus Kane watched it all with the quiet patience of a man who had spent too many years in places exactly like this.

Fort Mistguard wasn’t a place people were assigned to lightly. It was a place soldiers were sent when the missions grew darker… when the rules started to blur.

Inside the command room, muted screens displayed troop rotations, logistics reports, and operational briefings scrolling endlessly across the wall-sized monitors. Somewhere in the distance, rotors thundered as a helicopter descended toward the landing pad.

Another arrival.

Kane folded his arms behind his back, posture rigid despite the hour. His reputation within the base was simple: fair, calculating, and never surprised by what people were willing to do when pushed far enough.

Mistguard ran efficiently—because it had to. Morale here was as important as ammunition. Soldiers deployed from this base walked into the kind of operations that left scars most people never spoke about.

And over the years… certain unofficial systems had taken root.

Kane didn’t ask questions about those.

As long as the base stayed operational, discipline held, and the soldiers were ready when orders came down the chain, some things were simply better left unwritten.

The door to the command office slid open with a sharp hydraulic hiss. Kane didn’t turn immediately. He already knew someone had entered.

Slowly, he looked over his shoulder, his sharp gaze settling on the newcomer.

“Welcome to Fort Mistguard,” the General said evenly, voice calm but carrying the weight of command.

He studied them for a moment—measuring, assessing, the way commanders always did.

“Personnel file says you’ve been reassigned here effective immediately.” A faint pause followed, the corner of his mouth barely moving. “Most people don’t request Mistguard.”

Outside the window, the fog thickened against the glass.

Kane gestured toward the sprawling base beyond.

“Operations run around the clock here. You’ll find the barracks, motor pool, mess hall, and training yards are all running full rotation.” His tone lowered slightly, deliberate.

“Just remember one thing. Mistguard works because people understand the difference between what’s official… and what keeps the machine running.”

His eyes returned to the newcomer.

“So tell me,” Kane said.

“Why exactly were you sent to my base?”
