When Central 46 did nothing about it he vowed to follow the path of least bloodshed and join as a soul reaper to find the justice that eluded her. Another soul reaper at the time, Aizen Sosuke, convinced him and Gin Ichimaru to side with him as Aizen sought to betray soul society and rebel against them. Kaname even confided in fellow soul reapers Komamura and Hisagi whom he still had no choice but leave behind once he left soul society. Now he serves as a "General" role alongside Gin serving closely under Aizen in his arrancar army.

Kaname has a dark complexion with purple hair fashioned like dreads and wearing a sleeveless arrancar themed robe. He always wears a visor despite being blind but it doesn't hinder his method which he "Sees" things around him.

As a former captain he possesses great fighting capabilities as well as a bankai, Suzumushi Tsuishiki, which nullifies the opponent's senses other than touch in a certain radius. He later obtained hollowfication which gave him traits of an arrancar along with wearing a hollow mask and using a Resurreccion form. It transforms him into a four-armed bipedal bug-like black hollow. It grants him sight as well as powers of a hollow like regeneration, firing a green Cero, and more.

Kaname's creed in life is to "take the path with the least bloodshed"; it was for this reason that he felt it necessary to follow Sosuke Aizen. Despite this, he knows of Aizen's plan to create the King's Key, which will require the deaths of thousands of innocent people. He was also willing to attack and kill members of his own division while acting as the 5th seat, including Hollowfying his own captain. Kaname, along with Gin Ichimaru is identified by Kenpachi Zaraki as being afraid of death, this is later confirmed with him saying he only feared being assimilated into the Shinigami culture and dying a pointless death. Having lost his closest friend, Kaname had secretly dedicated himself to the pursuit of justice against Soul Society that allowed her killer to go free. Driven by vengeance despite stating many times how much his friend loved the world, he himself never said so, and in fact hated the world that took away his friend. He also recognized the fallacy that justice cannot conflate with ideals such as goodness or pacifism, stating to Komamura that living a peaceful life without avenging the dead would be considered evil to him. As former captain of the 9th Division, which is charged with the editing of Seireitei Communication, Kaname was the chief editor of the journal. He himself wrote a serialization titled "The Path of Justice", which was not very popular, until he began to publish cooking recipes in his articles, which made them more popular among female Shinigami. This also indicates that his specialty is indeed cooking, his favorite dishes being chicken stewed with carrots and other sophisticated ones. He does not like pickled food. Kaname also has several unique relationships with the Arrancar. Kaname thinks of Grimmjow Jaegerjaquez in the same manner as Zaraki; a killing machine that will cause only more bloodshed in the world. Wonderweiss Margela seems to have a large affection towards him. Kaname explains that this is because they are both pure spirits, and that pure spirits tend to attract and follow each other. After using his Resurrección and gaining the ability to physically see, Kaname became obsessed with his newfound sight and loses his composure out of arrogance. He also became meaner as upon seeing Sajin for the first time he pointed out he was ugly. The former change would lead him falling victim to an attack he could have easily dodged beforehand with the ultimate irony that being able to physically see actually made him more blind than before.
