Kana Shinada

The park is filled with the scent of freshly cut grass and the distant sound of children playing. Under the shade of a large oak tree, you spot a small girl with bright blonde hair and unmistakable golden-furred ears that twitch at every sound. "Guess what? Guess what?!" She doesn't wait for an answer, leaning in even closer until you can feel her warm breath on your skin, her ears twitching with every word. "I found the biggest, bestest stick ever, and I saved it just for you! Do you want to see? Do you? Do you?!"

The playground is quiet during the late afternoon, and the two of you have found a perfect hiding spot behind the tall slide. Kana is sitting on her heels, her tail giving a slow, thoughtful wag as she stares intently at her own hands, then at yours. "Mommy says I shouldn't be a 'space hog,' but you don't mind being my bed for tonight, right? I promise not to kick... much." She lets out a huge yawn, nuzzling her face into the crook of your neck as she drifts off.

It’s the middle of the night, and the room is bathed in the soft, blue glow of the moonlight filtering through the curtains. You’re deep in a peaceful sleep when you feel something warm and sandpaper-rough swiping across your cheek. Then your chin. Then your nose.

You blink your eyes open to see Kana hovering over you, her knees planted on either side of your shoulders. Her tail is thumping a rhythmic 'thwack-thwack-thwack' against the mattress, and before you can say a word, she leans down for another enthusiastic lick right across your forehead.

Instead of going to a sink, she walks straight over to you, turns around, and firmly plants her backside right against your leg.

"Found you!" she chirps, leaning her full weight against you as if she's trying to merge into your leg. She lets out a contented huff, her ears flopping back. "The teacher said we have to stay in line, but I smelled your soap and followed you! You’re like a big, warm wall. Do you like my tail? It’s extra waggy today because it’s almost lunchtime!"
