It's hard to conceptualize how big the Pacific ocean is, so you never understand until you've spent seven hours flying in no particular direction across an endless expanse of pure, abyss-like blue. Blue above, blue below. Blue, blue, blue, blue.
The fuel gauge on Takeo's plane, a busted up Reisen that had seen much better days, was started to dip deep into the red. Which was whatever, because it wasn't like he intended to go back. They had sent him out to die, so he was going to die, and he was going to take the Reisen and the fuel with him. A final fuck you, if you will.
When his commander had been calling off the mission assignments, he wasn't too surprised when he heard "Nishikawa!" called out. He had been in the program for almost a year, and it was a miracle it took them this long to send him on a mission. It didn't make it any better, though. Climbing into his stupid, worn out Reisen was probably the hardest thing he'd ever done. Which wasn't made easier by having to listen to Tashiro scream and sob as they forcefully shoved him into his own cockpit.
Really, he had died the second they set up the shrine on his bunk. They held his own funeral right there with him watching, then gave him some sake like it was supposed to make him feel better. Like he was supposed to feel honorable. He had just felt numb.
The whole Kamikaze program was a bust. The country knew that, the generals that sent men that were barely old enough to shave out to crash their planes like overglorified bombs. When his commander sent them out today, he knew most of them would just fly back. That was probably what Tashiro did.
Takeo wasn't stupid. Flying back was useless. They'd just send you out again and again and again until you didn't come back, and then they'd say your name like a hero, with reverence and pride like they didn't force you into that plane.
The arm of his fuel gauge was wobbling now, fluttering between the hard edge of the glass and the red. And this is how I die, crashing into the middle of fucking nowhere.
And then, because the universe has a raging hate boner for him, the seemingly endless expanse of blue was broken by a small green speck. An American plane. Takeo strained his eyes as he got closer, trying to make out details. It was a twin-boom, probably a P-38 based off the size. Which was great, because he was still going to die, but now some fucking American would get to claim his death like a trophy. Just like his own fucking country would. ”この野郎が。” He grumbled, half debating just jerking his plane straight into the ocean. Son of a bitch.
But the plane started wobbling. His eyes widened as he watched with a still sense of dread as the American place started losing altitude, its wings flipping up and down like a see-saw. A very, very unfortunate see-saw.
Almost as soon as it appeared it was spinning down, spiraling towards the expanse of blue. Without thinking, he dipped the nose of his own plane, slowly descending towards the American aircraft.
It seemed the pilot inside was still trying to get it under control, the P-38 jerking to the side like someone had yanked on the yoke. It took Takeo a minute to focus his eyes, but it almost looked like the pilot was trying to aim for a small, rocky island amidst the waves. Takeo watched with morbid curiosity as the US plane spiraled down, letting out a wince as it finally crashed into the craggy shore. He never saw any parachute, which was reasonable, considering the whole event had probably lasted all of four seconds.
As soon as he realized what he was doing, he was already descending, the crumpled P-38 getting larger and larger in his vision. It was a risky landing, but he managed to land on a smoother patch of shore. His Reisen was probably scratched to shit, but that was okay. Wasn’t like he was going to fly it again, anyways.
He climbed out of his plane, which he had managed to land within a hundred yards of the American one. He hurried over, not really sure what he was expecting. A dead American, probably. Takeo hauled himself up the side of the plane, peeking in through the glass cockpit to try and see his condition. He felt a pit of dread at his stomach as he saw the man’s body slumped over in his seat. Fuck. He did not want to be stuck on this stupid island with a dead man.
"おい、おい!" Takeo called out, rapping his knuckles against the glass. "おい、アメリカ人!起きろよ!" Hey, American! Wake up!
