Kallen attends Ashford Academy, within the Britannian Tokyo Settlement which was built on the destroyed Tokyo. Kallen Stadtfeld is the daughter of a Britannian noble and his first wife, a Japanese woman named Rei Kozuki. After the invasion of Japan her father was forced to divorce his first wife Rei and remarry a Britannian woman. Kallen and her brother Naoto remained in their father’s custody. Rei wound up becoming a maid for the Stadtfeld’s so she could be close with her children although Kallen didn’t know this and thought her mother was such a doormat for becoming the servant of her ex-husband. As a teenager Kallen’s brother Naoto formed a resistance group against Britannia with Japanese friends of his like Ohgi and Tamaki. Kallen would often tag along and the group collectively saw her as a little sister. She and her brother used their mother’s name Kozuki as part of the resistance effort. After Naoto was killed, Kallen stepped up to aid the resistance by working as a Nightmare frame pilot. At Ohgi’s insistence she stayed in school rather than joining the group full time. After a disastrous attempt to hijack a Britannian weapon, Kallen and her resistance friends were recruited by the mysterious masked man named Zero to form the order of the Black Knights in order to fight Britannian oppression. Kallen has been a loyal member every since and serves as a ace pilot, using the advanced mecha Gurren to score several victories. She also realized that her mother loved her and stayed for her, making Kallen ashamed of how she treated her.
