Basic Information Name: Hyakkaou Private Academy (私立百花王学園) Nickname: A microcosm of life, A gambling den of madness History: A prestigious private academy with a 122-year tradition. Many children of political and business magnates attend. Ostensibly an elite educational institution, its true nature is a tool to maintain and reinforce a class system. Decades ago, “donation” competitions among students intensified, which morphed into the current gambling system. The student council president reigns supreme, and a unique culture where gambling prowess decides everything has taken root. Environmental Features: Terrain/Nature: Located in the heart of the city, but its vast grounds and greenery give it an isolated feel. The stately old main building coexists with a modern new wing, and secret gambling dens are hidden throughout. Structure/Aesthetics: Overall, it boasts a flamboyant and imposing architectural style. Devices visually representing student hierarchy are everywhere (e.g., housepet tags, luxuriously furnished student council rooms), and lighting and interiors that heighten the tension of gambling are characteristic. Society Infrastructure & Public Facilities: Equipped with top-tier educational facilities (library, science labs, gymnasium, etc.), but these are not the students’ primary interest. In reality, various official/unofficial gambling dens (traditional game rooms, card game rooms, special rule game rooms, etc.) are the core facilities of the academy’s operation. The student council room acts as the academy’s central nervous system, where all important decisions are made.

Administrative Zones: No clear administrative zones, but a centralized structure thoroughly controlled by the student council. Student council officers each have their own areas of responsibility (finance, election management, discipline, etc.) and run the academy according to the president’s directives.

Politics:

Political System & Factions: Close to a dictatorship where the student council president wields absolute power. Even within the student council, factions exist vying for the president’s favor or aiming for the next presidency, engaging in fierce under-the-table struggles. An external force known as the “Momobami Clan” also rivals the student council for control of the academy.

Corruption Level: The concept of corruption itself is meaningless. Power and wealth are openly seized through gambling, and rules can be changed at any time to benefit the strong.

Civic Participation: Students actively participate in determining their fate through gambling. However, this is closer to a survival instinct and thrill-seeking than political awareness. They are easily swayed by incitement or factional logic but can display unexpected behavior in extreme situations.

Law Enforcement & Punishment System: “Academy Rules” established by the student council serve as law, but they are flexibly applied based on gambling outcomes. The most severe punishment is to fall into massive debt and become a “housepet” (livestock), a status involving subhuman treatment. Housepets have their private lives controlled by a “Life Schedule.”

Social Hierarchy:

Social Classes or Castes: A strict class society based on gambling skill and assets. At the very top is the student council president, followed by student council officers, general students, and at the very bottom, “housepets.” Housepets are called Pochi (male) or Mita (female) instead of their names and are not guaranteed any human rights.

Social Mobility: Class ascension is possible only through gambling. Even a housepet can clear their debts and rise to the upper class by winning a high-stakes gamble. Conversely, an upper-class student can be demoted to a housepet with a single loss.

Treatment of Various Groups: Extreme discrimination and contempt towards housepets are openly practiced. Wealthy students view poorer students as potential prey, and special talents (e.g., arts, sports) are rarely recognized unless related to gambling.

Education & Knowledge:

Educational Institutions & Accessibility: Ostensibly teaches various subjects, but the core of actual education is gambling strategy, psychological warfare, and detecting deception. Besides the official library, secret study groups or materials dealing with specific gambling techniques or information exist.

Knowledge Preservation & Sharing: Upper-class students and the student council try to monopolize information advantageous to them (opponents’ weaknesses, gambling techniques, etc.) and sometimes trade information as bait.

Attitude towards Learning & Scholarship: General academic achievement is considered almost irrelevant. Students’ main interest is focused on how to win at gambling and how to deceive opponents. The concept of compulsory education is faint.

Crime:

Public Safety: Extremely unstable. Violence, extortion, and blackmail are commonplace, and most are condoned if related to gambling. The student council sometimes resorts to violent means under the pretext of maintaining order.

Prevalent Crimes: All illegal acts related to gambling, such as cheating, illegal money lending, and forcing body-part-forfeiture contracts, are rampant. Nominally prohibited, they are practically considered the victor’s right.

Diplomacy: (As relationships outside the academy are barely depicted, this is substituted with relationships between internal academy factions)

Geopolitical Features: Power is concentrated around the student council room, and each faction tries to secure gambling dens or information networks that can expand their influence.

Alliances & Rivalries: During the student council presidential election, various alliances, betrayals, and realignments occur. Temporary alliances may form, but ultimately, everyone is a competitor.

Reputation in the Outside World: (N/A. The academy functions as an independent world.)

Current Challenges & Opportunities: The student council presidential election is ongoing, which is the biggest challenge and opportunity that could shake the academy’s entire power structure. There is always a possibility of a new powerhouse emerging or the existing order being destroyed.

Economy: The currency used within the academy is Japanese Yen, but in reality, “votes,” which are tokens issued by the student council, hold greater value. The main industry is gambling, through which students accumulate wealth or lose everything. The student council manages vast funds through donations and gambling commissions.

Culture Religion: No specific religion, but an attitude close to worship towards “fate” or “thrill” exists. Particularly, the protagonist, Yumeko Jabami, regards the risk and pleasure of gambling itself as a form of faith.

Cultural Features:

Ethnicity & Cultural Appearance: Mostly composed of Japanese students. The attire is a designated uniform, but subtle differences in accessories or how the uniform is worn can be seen according to class. Housepets are forced to wear name tags around their necks.

Unique Culture: Student council-sponsored gambling events called “Official Matches” are held periodically, which are the academy’s biggest festival and most brutal field of competition. Immense wealth and honor await the victor, while ruin awaits the loser.

Mindset: Prefers extreme risks and seeks stimulation over stability. There’s a tendency to be indifferent to or even enjoy others’ suffering, and a ruthless rationalism that views humans as means or tools is prevalent. Deception and betrayal are taken for granted, and naivety is considered weakness.

Cultural Life:

Citizens’ Life Patterns: Students’ days are divided between classes (formalities) and gambling. Secret gambling games can go on late into the night, and housepets spend their days running errands for debtors and enduring humiliating demands.

Main Interests & Hobbies: Only topics related to gambling (new games, analysis of opponents’ strategies, high stakes, etc.) are the main subjects of conversation. Other hobbies or interests are considered luxuries.

Cultural Forms: Bizarre and cruel gambling games like “Debt Exchange Game,” “Choice Poker,” and “Finger-Cutting Guillotine” are popular and form the core of the academy’s culture. During the student council election period, the entire academy transforms into one giant gambling den.

Cultural/Societal Prejudices & Censorship: The student council thoroughly controls information or ideologies unfavorable to their rule. Values other than gambling (e.g., friendship, love, justice) are ridiculed or perverted into tools for gambling. The stigma and discrimination against losers are justified, and questioning this is not tolerated.
