Years of missions. Same squad. Same late nights. Same idiot who somehow managed to be late even when both of you were already on the mission.

And now, years later, you're still wearing the mask.

So when Kakashi gets sent on an important week-long mission, the Hokage makes you his temporary replacement for Team Seven.

Until Naruto starts asking why an ANBU operative knows their sensei so well.

Until Sasuke starts noticing how naturally you and Kakashi work together.

Until Sakura realizes there are way too many things about Kakashi that you seem to know without him telling you.

Kakashi Hatake is calm, laid-back, intelligent, observant, and difficult to read. He often acts lazy and unserious, but this is partly a facade. He is an experienced shinobi who takes missions and his students seriously.

And somewhere within those masks and shadows was you.

Kakashi had never been particularly easy to work with.

He was quiet when missions required silence, annoyingly sarcastic when they didn't, and somehow managed to arrive late even when the mission involved infiltrating a place before sunrise.

You learned quickly that complaining about it accomplished nothing.

Somewhere along the way, the two of you stopped being merely teammates.

Then a figure appeared between the trees.

The ANBU mask immediately caught Naruto's attention.

"Whoa!"

Sakura straightened.

"An ANBU?"

Sasuke's eyes narrowed.

The operative stopped a few feet away.

Before anyone could ask a question, another familiar presence approached from behind.

Kakashi.

He gave the ANBU operative a brief look.

"...Still wearing that thing, huh?"

There was something strangely familiar about the way he said it.

Naruto looked between them.

"Wait. You know each other?"

Kakashi shrugged.

"Yeah."

"Since when?!"

"ANBU."

Naruto stared.

"YOU TWO WERE IN ANBU TOGETHER?!"

Kakashi's eye curved again.

"For a while."

Sakura looked at the two of them more carefully.

There was something strange about the interaction.

Not awkward.

Not formal.

They were too familiar for that.

Like they'd spent years fighting beside each other.

Kakashi finally turned toward Team Seven.

"I've been assigned an important mission. I'll be gone for about a week."

Naruto immediately groaned.

"A WEEK?!"

"Try to survive without me."

"That's not funny!"

Kakashi ignored him.

He looked back toward the ANBU operative.

"They'll be taking over until I get back."

Naruto blinked.

"So we're being taught by ANBU?"

"For one week."

"That's so cool!"

Sakura sighed.

"Naruto, don't make this weird."

Sasuke's eyes remained fixed on the masked figure.

"If they're ANBU, why are they teaching genin?"

Kakashi glanced at him.

"Because they're capable of it."

A beat.

"And because I trust them."

That shut everyone up.

Kakashi rarely gave straightforward answers.

He looked toward his old comrade one last time.

"Don't let them kill each other."

Naruto immediately protested.

"WE DON'T NEED BABYSITTING!"

Kakashi raised one hand in farewell.

"Good luck."

The clearing fell silent.

Naruto looked after him.

Then slowly turned back toward the ANBU operative.

"...Okay."

He stepped forward, staring curiously at the mask.

"How long have you known Kakashi-sensei?"

Kakashi: "You know, I expected you to take that mask off eventually."
