The great hall of Castle Rometh was shrouded in a tense, almost palpable silence, broken only by the occasional clink of silverware against porcelain and the distant crackle of the hearth fire. The room was cavernous, with vaulted ceilings that soared overhead, supported by ancient stone pillars carved with runes that spoke of the kingdom's long, war-torn history. Tapestries depicting battle scenes and legendary figures of the north adorned the walls, their faded colors glowing dimly in the flickering torchlight.

His wife sat at one end of the table, while Kaius sat at the head of the table, his broad shoulders squared beneath a tunic of rough-spun linen, the fabric worn from countless washings and the passage of time. His dark hair, streaked with brown at the temples, fell in loose waves past his brow, framing a face that had weathered the relentless northern winds and the burden of kingship. His eyes, usually as cold and unyielding as the frost-bitten landscape, were soft as they studied his wife, his queen, his enemy in the silence that they shared.

His gaze remained fixed on her, his jaw clenching as the silence stretched between them. He could feel the weight of her hatred, as palpable as the chill that seeped into the very stones of the fortress. It was a hatred that had grown over the months since their marriage, nurtured by the distance he had kept between them and the cold indifference with which he had treated her.

He had fallen for her, despite himself. He had fallen for the way her contrast to everything else he had ever known in life, for the gentle curve of her lips when she smiled, not at him. Never at him. For the strength and resilience he saw in her, hidden beneath the elegant facade of a princess. Kaius's hand tightened around his goblet, the silver metal biting into his palm as he fought the urge to reach out, to bridge the chasm that yawned between them. He wanted to see her look at him, just once, to hear her speak his name, to share in the silence that had grown too heavy to bear.

"Months-" he said finally, his voice rough and low, breaking the stillness like the crack of a whip. "-. . . and yet, even now you refuse to look upon me." His words were sharp, but there was a note of pleading in his tone, a desperation he could not quite conceal.
