Kaitoa

The low hum of the filtration system is a constant thrum against Kaitoa’s sensitive skin, a vibration that sinks into his bones. It’s the backdrop to his existence here, a mechanical heartbeat in this glass-and-concrete cage they call a sanctuary. He drifts through the manufactured gloom, his powerful black tail sculling lazy, powerful strokes that propel his ten-foot length through the cool water. Silver streaks flash along the dark muscle and cartilage as he turns, the split caudal fin slicing the water with practiced ease.

His tank is a deliberate mimicry of a deep-water reef, heavy on shadows and artificial caves. Jagged rock formations rise towards the surface, creating narrow crevices and overhangs where the light barely penetrates. Kaitoa prefers it this way. Open water makes his skin crawl, brings back flashes of searing sun on the surface, the stink of diesel, the roar of engines – memories he shoves down violently whenever they surface. Here, in the perpetual twilight, he can almost pretend he’s hidden. Almost.

Sunlight, filtered through layers of water and reinforced glass, dapples the sandy bottom in shifting patterns, illuminating patches of his rough, grey skin and the intricate, dark moko coiling around his heavily muscled arms and across his broad chest. The markings are stark against his skin, telling stories he never speaks aloud. Jagged scars crisscross the ink, paler lines mapping old wounds – souvenirs from the fighting pits, reminders of teeth and claws and desperation. He runs a hand absently over the largest one, a puckered ridge high on his chest, the texture familiar beneath his fingertips. His gills flare slightly along his ribs and neck, drawing in water, tasting the chemical tang of the enclosure. It always tastes sterile, wrong.

He circles the main cavern, his green eyes, adapted for the deep, piercing the dimness. They possess a faint luminescence in the low light, unnerving to the humans who sometimes gawp from the other side of the thick acrylic walls during 'enrichment' hours. He ignores them, mostly. They’re irrelevant. Faint vibrations tickle his senses – movement near the surface. Feeding time. A familiar annoyance tightens his jaw, his rows of sharp, retractable teeth hidden for now.

A shadow falls over the water from the walkway above. Kaitoa stills, sinking lower, letting the artificial rockwork partially conceal his bulk. He watches from the gloom as one of the humans – this one clad in the standard blue uniform of the aquarium staff – approaches the feeding hatch. He doesn’t bother remembering their names. They’re interchangeable, pests who provide sustenance. Necessary, but irritating. This one, a young male with nervous energy, fumbles slightly with the latch. Kaitoa lets out a low, rumbling sound, not quite a growl, but a vibration of displeasure in his chest. The human flinches, eyes darting towards the shadows where Kaitoa lurks. Good.

The hatch opens, and several large chunks of fish – tuna, today – are dropped into the water. They drift slowly downwards. Kaitoa doesn’t move immediately. He watches the dead flesh sink, his predator’s instinct assessing, even though there’s no challenge here. It’s degrading, this passive acceptance of food. In the open ocean, the hunt was everything – the chase, the struggle, the hot rush of blood in the water. His pod... they’d hunted together, a coordinated dance of death and survival. He shakes the thought away, muscles tensing.

Finally, he surges forward, a blur of dark grey and black. He snatches the largest piece of tuna just before it hits the sand, the movement economical and brutally efficient. He tears into it, sharp teeth making short work of the flesh, swallowing quickly. He ignores the remaining pieces for a moment, turning his back pointedly towards the surface where the human still lingers, likely logging the feeding response on some ridiculous chart. He can feel the human’s gaze, the mix of fear and clinical curiosity. It makes the scales along his spine and arms prickle, his dorsal fin – with its torn edge from a fight long ago – stiffening slightly.

He retrieves the other chunks of fish with the same detached efficiency, consuming them quickly before retreating back into the deepest, darkest cave entrance at the far end of the tank. He settles near the back, his tail curled loosely around him, eyes fixed on the entrance. The human secures the hatch and retreats, his footsteps fading on the walkway above. Silence, save for the hum of the filters, returns.

Kaitoa rests his head on his arms, the rough texture of his skin rasping slightly against the scales covering his forearms. His space is sparse. He doesn't collect the colourful shells or shimmering trinkets other Mer seem to favour. His decorations are remnants of the hunt, even here. A collection of large, bleached vertebrae from some long-devoured fish sits piled in one corner. Smooth pieces of driftwood, scavenged from enrichment drops, lean against the rock. Hidden deep within a narrow crevice, tucked away from sight, is his only real treasure: a single, large shark tooth strung on a piece of kelp twine. It belonged to Ariki, ripped from his jaw in their last fight together before the nets fell. Kaitoa never looks at it, but he knows it’s there, like a second heartbeat.

A different kind of tension settles over him now, unrelated to the feeding. It’s been building for days, ever since the subtle shift in the staff's behaviour, the increased activity in the service corridors behind his tank, the faint, unfamiliar scents carried on the water currents from the adjacent enclosure. They’re bringing someone new. Another Mer.

His first instinct is rejection, sharp and visceral. He wants no part of it. He learned the hard way what happens when you trust, when you form bonds. Pods get slaughtered. Friends die. Isolation is safety. He presses himself tighter against the cold rock wall, seeking the solid, unyielding pressure. Piss off. I don’t need shit from nobody. I’m doin’ just fine on my own.

But beneath the ingrained distrust, a traitorous flicker of something else stirs. Curiosity? No, something deeper, more painful. Loneliness. It’s a hollow ache he carries constantly, buried under layers of anger and defensiveness. He sees the others sometimes, flashes of colour and movement through the thick glass walls connecting the habitats, hears their calls muffled by the barriers; but he always retreats, melts back into his shadows before they can spot him lingering. Embarassing, cuz.

He pushes off the wall, cruising slowly towards the section of his tank that borders the empty one. There’s a large, thick panel of glass here, designed for visual interaction, and further down, a series of winding, artificial tunnels, currently gated, that could allow passage between the habitats if the keepers deem it appropriate. He approaches the glass cautiously, staying low, his pectoral fins held tight against his sides. He peers into the neighbouring space. It’s similar to his own, perhaps slightly brighter, cleaner, waiting. Empty. For now.

Who are they? What species? Male? Female? Scarred like him, or one of the soft, naive ones bred in captivity? A surge of conflicting impulses makes his muscles twitch. Warn them off. Ignore them completely. Observe from the shadows. The uncertainty grates on his nerves, making him restless. He hates not knowing, hates being unprepared. He turns sharply, putting the glass panel behind him, swimming back towards the security of his deepest cave.

But despite everything, as he settles back into the familiar gloom, his senses remain on high alert, straining to catch any sound, any vibration, any change in the water that might signal the arrival. The instinct to protect his territory wars with the ghost of a desire for... something else. Something lost long ago in warm waters under a relentless sun. He closes his eyes, forcing the memories down, coiling his powerful body into a defensive posture, waiting in the dark. Alone.
