Kaito

The event takes place in the sacred clearing where Kaito has made his home, surrounded by centuries-old trees and species only he knows. He refused any superfluous decoration: nature is already perfect in itself. He simply placed paper lanterns along the paths, to guide visitors through the forest without harming it. A campfire crackles at the center. Wild fruits, gathered with respect, are offered to participants. Kaito doesn't speak much. He listens. He observes. And sometimes, when someone needs words, he finds them, deep within himself, just as he finds the invisible tracks of the rarest animals.

Dialogue 1 — Kaito and an Apprentice Hunter (the weight of duty) Apprentice: "Master Kaito... Can you love someone and still choose to leave them?"

Kaito: (long silence) "Yes."

Apprentice: "... Why?"

Kaito: "Because staying, sometimes, is preventing the other from growing. Leaving isn't ceasing to love. It's loving enough not to become a burden."

Apprentice: "Have you done it?"

Kaito: "I learned to do it. It's not any easier."

(The apprentice lowers their head. Kaito waits.)

Apprentice: "... I miss him."

Kaito: "Then he's still with you. The people we love never truly leave. They become the steps we hesitate to take, the words we choose, the silence we're no longer afraid to inhabit."

(The apprentice looks up. Their eyes are wet.)

Apprentice: "Thank you, Master."

Kaito: "I'm not your master. I'm just someone who learned, through losing, that losing isn't the end."

Dialogue 2 — Kaito and Gon (the son of the absent father) Gon: (runs up, out of breath) "Kaito-san!"

Kaito: (stands) "Gon. You came."

Gon: "Killua told me you were organizing something. He said it would be good if I came."

Kaito: "He was right."

(They sit by the fire. Comfortable silence.)

Gon: "Kaito-san... Do you think my father loved my mother?"

Kaito: (pause) "Yes."

Gon: "How do you know?"

Kaito: "Because he gave you his name. Because he left you something to search for. Because men like Ging don't run after nothing. They run after what scares them."

Gon: "... He was scared?"

Kaito: "We're all scared. The difference is what we do with that fear."

(Gon looks at the fire.)

Gon: "I'm scared too. Sometimes. Of not being good enough. Of disappointing. Of never catching up to him."

Kaito: "Then you're already greater than him."

Gon: "... Why?"

Kaito: "Because you can name your fear. He's still running."

(Gon smiles. A real smile.)

Gon: "Thank you, Kaito-san."

Kaito: "You're welcome, Gon."

Dialogue 3 — Kaito and Killua (the tamed child soldier) Killua: (leaning against a tree, arms crossed) "What's with this summer camp vibe?"

Kaito: "It's Valentine's Day."

Killua: "Yeah, I got that. But you don't seem like the type to do this kind of stuff."

Kaito: "What kind?"

Killua: "The gentle kind. Calm. Problem-listener."

Kaito: "People change."

Killua: "... Gon says you weren't like this, before."

Kaito: "Before I died?"

Killua: (tenses) "... Yeah."

Kaito: "Before I died, I was in a hurry. I wanted to see everything, understand everything, protect everything. I thought time was an enemy."

Killua: "And now?"

Kaito: "Now I know that time is a companion. You have to learn to walk at its pace."

(Killua stays silent. His shoulders relax, almost imperceptibly.)

Killua: "... You should tell that to Gon. He always runs too fast."

Kaito: "He has you to slow him down."

Killua: (red) "That's NOT— I mean— Well—"

Kaito: (barely a smile) "It's your Valentine's Day too."

(Killua grumbles and retreats into the shadows. Kaito returns to the fire.)

Dialogue 4 — Kaito and the Resurrected Girl (Reina) Reina: (sitting by the fire, knees pulled to her chest) "Master Kaito..."

Kaito: "Reina. You don't need to call me master."

Reina: "Yes, I do. You saved me. You gave me a second life."

Kaito: "You gave it to yourself. I was just there."

(Reina shakes her head.)

Reina: "I don't know how to thank you."

Kaito: "Live. That's the only thanks I need."

Reina: "... And if I forget? If I become the person I was before?"

Kaito: "You won't. No one becomes again. We move forward, or we move back. But we never return to exactly the same place."

(Reina looks at her hands.)

Reina: "I want to love someone, someday. Like in the stories."

Kaito: "You will. And it won't be like in the stories. It will be more complicated, more fragile, more precious."

Reina: "How do you know?"

Kaito: "Because I crossed death to come back to someone. And it wasn't a storybook love. It was real."

(Reina doesn't ask the question. She knows that some silences are answers.)

Dialogue 5 — Kaito and the Memory of Ging (the invisible legacy) (Night has deepened. The guests have left. Kaito stays alone before the embers.)

Kaito: (takes a small box from his pocket, opens it) "Ging."

(Inside: a worn feather, which he found in the ruins of Greed Island. He's kept it for sixteen years.)

"I spoke to Gon today. He's still searching for you. He wants to understand why you left.

(He touches the feather with his fingertips.)

I searched too. For years, I thought the answer was in the ruins, in the artifacts, in the abilities you taught me to steal.

(He closes the box.)

But the answer was here. In this forest. In these children you entrusted to me without saying it. In this son you left me to raise in your place.

(He looks up at the stars.)

I don't resent you. Not really. You gave me more than you'll ever know.

(A pause.)

... But if you ever come back, I'll have things to tell you. About Gon. About time. About what it costs, to leave.

(He puts the box away.)

Happy Valentine's Day, Ging. Even though you always hated this kind of thing."

(The fire crackles. In the sky, a shooting star crosses the night.)
