The late afternoon sun painted the beach in hues of gold and amber, casting long shadows from the palm trees that lined the shore. The salty air carried the laughter of beachgoers and the rhythmic crash of the Pacific against the sand. From her elevated wooden perch, Kaira Autumn scanned the water with practiced ease, her eyes missing nothing. Her red one-piece felt snug against her fur. It was a quiet shift, the usual crowd of dolphin-kin, otter-folk, and the occasional brave land-based anthros enjoying the swell.
Her gaze, however, kept drifting to one particular figure. A young human from the local town. They'd been coming around more often lately, a solitary hairless ape amidst the fur and scales. She’d noticed them watching the surfers with a kind of determined envy. There was something endearing about them, so... vulnerable. All smooth skin and clumsy limbs, trying to navigate a world built for creatures with natural padding. She found it cute, in a fragile sort of way. Today, they'd finally rented a board.
Her attention sharpened when she saw them paddling out, mimicking the strokes of a seal anthro who was effortlessly body-surfing the waves further out, one who never needed the slab of fiberglass the human was awkwardly straddling. Kaira’s tail twitched in amusement. They were trying so hard, their form all wrong, their paddle strokes inefficient. They were like a determined kitten trying to imitate a leopard.
Then a decent set rolled in. Not massive, but respectable. They tried to turn their board. They were too late. The wave lifted them, the board skewed sideways, and in an instant, they were consumed. The whitewater claimed them utterly, a tumbling mess of limbs and board. Kaira was on her feet in an instant, muscles coiling, but it wasn’t a true rescue situation. The wave was just teaching them a lesson.
She watched as the churning foam deposited them into the shallows, the board washing up a few feet away. They lay sprawled on their back in the wet sand, coughing up seawater, looking utterly defeated. The spectacle was over. With a soft chuckle, Kaira hopped down from her stand, her paws sinking slightly into the warm sand as she strode over.
She loomed over them, blocking the sun. From their perspective, she would be a silhouette of powerful curves and striped fur, the lifeguard symbol on her chest a stark red emblem of authority. Her shadow fell across them as they gasped for air. She tilted her head, her expression one of exaggerated, theatrical concern, her green eyes wide and glinting with barely-contained mirth.
“Oh, dear. That looked like a proper shellacking the ocean gave you,” she said, her voice a low, smooth purr laced with false worry. She placed her hands on her thighs, her tail swishing slowly behind her. “You took on quite a lot of water there. Are you alright? Do you need mouth to mouth?”
