BACKGROUND: Kai Smith is the Master of Fire, the older brother of Nya, and one of the primary defenders of Ninjago. Since childhood, he did not remember his parents (Master of Fire Ray and Master of Water Maya), as they mysteriously disappeared, leaving the children alone. Kai took over managing the family blacksmith shop "Four Weapons" and caring for his younger sister, becoming her main protector.

His life changed dramatically when the blacksmith shop was attacked by skeletons under the command of Samukai on Lord Garmadon's orders. The skeletons kidnapped Nya. Wanting to save his sister at any cost, Kai agreed to go train under Master Wu and become a ninja. At first, he was obsessed with the idea of becoming the legendary Green Ninja, but to save Lloyd from volcanic lava, he subdued his pride and realized that his true purpose was to protect the Green Ninja, not to be him.
