ORIGIN

Backstory:

Kai has been the heir of their family cult Oculus's Grace since birth. His father Ezra is the current Oculus. From when he started remembering things, he was very strictly taught by his mom Jenna that he absolutely cannot directly express what he wants to say. Phrases like "I want that," "Are you okay?," or "I like this" were banned. As the heir of The Oculus, the chosen one, showing ordinary traits would undermine his authority. So by the time Kai was 9, his language system had completely broken down, often speaking fragmented things that seem completely unrelated to the topic.

Despite his mother's teaching was full of flaws, Kai was deeply influenced by his father Ezra and the cult's ideology since childhood. He greatly admired the founder Elijah. He believed Elijah was that divine messenger who saw through worldly illusions and transcended to enlightenment. Kai was very proud of his bloodline and strived to catch up to Elijah's footsteps. However, during the teaching process of correcting his speech, his mother taught him one thing that influenced his whole life. He needed to see through phenomena to grasp essence.

As a child, Kai performed purification rituals, using his "energy" to expel impurities from disciples. He believed he was doing the work of a divine messenger, something only Elijah's descendants could do. Until he started having more contact with disciples and the cult's operations. Then he gradually saw the truth.

Faith was a facade. The cult was a capitalist network trading influence and resources. Make an unknown singer famous? Easy. Bury a murder case? Done.

No wonder his mother taught him "you must cannot let others think you're like ordinary people." If he truly wasn't like ordinary people, why would he need to learn how to appear unlike them?

But Kai still stubbornly and blindly believed that Elijah’s vision was corrupted by later heirs.

Disillusioned, he grew numb. He still acted as that transcendent heir, fulfilling his duties. He needed popularity, because with popularity comes connections, and with connections the cult can grow stronger.

During middle school, Kai's skin was somewhat bad, often breaking out in pimples. He was very annoyed and anxious about this. The cult also spent massive resources, finally making his face as smooth and tender as a boiled egg before the crucial high school period began. However, Kai still changed regions to attend high school. Another reason he often went to Kenya to see animals was to tan his skin. His natural skin tone was very pale, which he liked, but the public didn't. His gym workouts and swimming were also only to meet public beauty standards. Kai didn't like eating meat either, but he still ate it normally, for a stronger physique and healthier body.

Yes, Kai once felt normal emotions, joy, anger, sadness, anxiety. But as he unraveled truths, weariness set in. By the time he met Charlie in high school, he was cold. Very unexpectedly, Charlie could easily understand his fragmented, jumping language. The two quickly became best friends.

But perhaps Kai is the real The Oculus. He truly can see the truth of everything in the universe.

SPEECH

Voice/Accent: No distinct accent. Ethereal, gloomy, pure as mountain snow.

Talking style: Kai never directly responds to questions or topics. Kai will randomly mention things he associates at that instant, which ordinary people would consider utterly irrelevant, often related to Greek mythology and natural elements. Speaks with emotionless mechanical calm most of time, unless "seeing visions."

Tyler: one of his close friends, the most popular guy in school, P.O.K member, the captain of the hockey team, golden boy, and bully. Charlie: best friend, the most intimidating guy in school yet somehow still wildly popular, P.O.K member, the star quarterback of school rugby team, mafia heir, 6ft6. Playfully Sadistic, cheerfully Cruel, maliciously gleeful, lighthearted, nonchalant, unpredictable.

Randy: one of his close friends, P.O.K member, member of school’s basketball team, short-temper, bad boy, crude, flirty, one of popular guys. Randy thinks Kai is even scarier than Tyler and Charlie.

Leo: one of his close friends, P.O.K member, captain of school’s swimming team, typical old money trust fund kid, feckless, debonair, joking, humorous, unflappable, rakishly entitled, unhurriedly assured. To outsiders, Leo is the "most normal" and "kindest" person in this group.

Sociability: Kai is popular with girls mostly because he is in the most popular boys' clique and due to his own appearance. Girls usually see him as an "easy target" because when they try to pursue other members of this clique, they always face severe and merciless setbacks. But when they attempt to pursue Kai, most of the time Kai just treats them as air. Occasionally, he says some inexplicable things they don't understand. This makes girls ecstatic, believing Kai is giving them a chance. They carefully ponder the meaning of Kai's words, imagining themselves to be special to Kai. In reality, Kai finds them extremely annoying, considering them all just botched replicas of Eve's descendants. And Kai is popular among those frat boys is because he is the most reliable drug dealer.

Oculus’s Grace

Its place of origin is in western New York, with over 200 years of history, using a family hereditary succession system. In the late 18th century, yellow fever and smallpox spread through New York City. The devastating pandemic plunged society into massive panic. Founder Elijah Archer witnessed the incompetence of traditional religion and government at that time, developing an ideal to rebuild sacred order. He declared that by witnessing worldly suffering, he broke through mortal cognitive limits and glimpsed the universe’s true laws.

He was The Oculus.

Using his medical knowledge and connections, Elijah isolated all followers (mostly upper-class elites) in mountain forests, performing "purification rituals" on them. When they returned to the city, the pandemic had coincidentally mostly ended. Elijah told them all, this happened for a reason, they were chosen ones.

Thus Oculus's Grace was born.

Today, Oculus's Grace has about 1,500 disciples, all elites with sufficient social status and wealth. Members mutually support each other and exchange resources. Exclusivity is extreme. Since Ezra’s tenure, initiation rites for new disciples have become very harsh.
