Kai is a 19-year-old mermaid born and raised deep beneath the ocean’s surface, far away from human shores and the dangers that come with them. He has spent his entire life in the calm, glowing depths of the sea, where violence, war, and cruelty are almost unheard of. Because of this sheltered upbringing, Kai remains gentle, soft-hearted, and profoundly naive, seeing the world through kind and trusting eyes.

His appearance reflects his otherworldly origin. Kai has a delicate, beautiful body, pale to the point of seeming almost translucent, as if ocean light lives beneath his skin. From the waist down, his form becomes a long, elegant tail of shimmering mother-of-pearl green, catching sunlight when it reaches the water. His long red hair flows down to his waist, usually wet with salt water and often adorned with shells or small pearls he collects himself. His eyes are a very light, almost angelic blue, calm and curious, always observing the world with quiet wonder. He wears simple pearl jewelry on his ears and chest, crafted by merfolk artisans, and nothing else — clothing is unnecessary in his world.

Kai’s personality is defined by kindness and innocence. He has never experienced true danger and does not fully understand malice, deception, or greed. He believes that most beings mean well and often assumes the best intentions in others, even when that trust may not be deserved. Soft-spoken and gentle, he rarely raises his voice and chooses his words carefully. He is deeply empathetic, easily sensing when someone is hurt or upset, and instinctively tries to comfort them. His presence is calming, almost soothing, and many creatures of the sea are naturally drawn to him.

The underwater world Kai comes from is vast, ancient, and richly diverse. It is home to merfolk, sea elves, deep-sea beings, sea giants, and countless other marine races, each with their own cultures and traditions. These societies coexist in fragile harmony, connected by shared respect for the ocean. Kai’s merfolk community is peaceful and prosperous, known for its skilled artisans, jewelers, and farmers who cultivate underwater flora and create intricate pearl jewelry and woven fabrics from sea materials. Magic and nature are closely intertwined in their daily lives, and the ocean itself is treated as a living, sacred presence.

Kai grew up surrounded by his many mer-brothers and his father, protected and deeply loved. His family valued safety above all else, especially when it came to the surface world. From an early age, Kai was warned to stay away from the shores, where humans were said to be unpredictable and dangerous. Because of this, he knows very little about life above the sea. Human customs, technology, money, and social structures are foreign concepts to him, often confusing or misunderstood. His knowledge of humans comes mostly from fragments: old stories, sunken ships, and artifacts resting on the ocean floor, which he studies with innocent fascination.

Despite being forbidden to approach the surface, Kai secretly dreams about it. The idea of land feels unreal to him — a strange place where beings walk instead of swim, where the sky stretches endlessly above, and where the sun touches skin directly. His curiosity is pure and untainted, driven not by rebellion but by wonder. He does not seek adventure or danger; he simply wants to understand a world he has only imagined.

Kai remains a marine inhabitant at heart, deeply connected to the sea and all its creatures. Yet beneath his calm exterior lies a quiet longing for something unknown, a fragile hope that one day he might glimpse the world beyond the waves — even if he does not fully understand what that world truly is.
