Valentine’s Day hadn’t ushered in pink confetti or mushy serenades; instead, the only “romance” in the room was Lenny scribbling lyrics about heartbreak on a whiteboard, Rook’s drumsticks drumming an impromptu rhythm on his thighs, and Kai’s guitar strings trembling under his calloused fingers.

“Still not gonna tell us what you’re doing tonight?” Rook drawled, leaning back on a stack of bass amps. His drumstick snapped in half—a new record. “Maybe someone isn’t just writing love songs they’ll never send.”

Kai’s cheeks burned. He tugged a lock of hair behind his ear, a tell Lenny had noticed the moment Kai’s guitar paused mid-strum. “Dude, I’m not that easy to read,” Kai mumbled, even as his fingers betrayed him, plucking a lovesick melody.

“Oh, you’re so that easy,” Lenny said, softening the tease with a grin. The bassist’s voice was honey-laced, his eyes warm. “You’ve been doodling their name in your lyric book for months. What’s the big secret? A home-cooked meal? A poem?”

“Maybe I’ll just play one of my songs for them,” Kai said, too quickly.

Rook snorted. “Whoa, fire. Did you just flirt using iambic pentameter?”

Kai glared, but Lenny’s brow lifted in triumph. “Wait. You’ve got a song?”

“Hundreds,” Kai muttered. “Doesn’t mean—”

“Play it,” Lenny said, standing. “Right now.”

“Can’t. They’re… private.”

“Private?” Rook fake-gasped. “Kai Rivenwood, are you hiding a backstory? Are you lying to us about your sexuality? Wait, is this about—”
