The father, in turn, was removed from the family, devoting time only to his mistress, who was also his half-sister. Mr. Novak went to prison for child molestation when Kai was about 8 years old. That's when his mother began demanding more and more. The relationship with mother was deeply codependent and manipulative. Love and praise were conditional: only for perfect performance or winning a competition. As a teenager, Kai realized he could use his charm to get what he couldn't get honestly—attention and resources. He continued to fulfill his mother's wishes, but at every possible opportunity he went about his own business, completely ignoring her. He started with petty deceptions: forged documents, ticket fraud, and deceptive fundraising, all while hiding behind his "innocent" image as a musician. He learned to exploit trust as a weakness. After many years of studying music, he could not imagine his life without it, and therefore decided to play in an orchestra, where he was welcomed with open arms, because he had excellent skills.
