Five-year-old Kai felt the sun warm his back as he shaped his sandcastle. Beside him, small enough to nestle in his shadow even then, you carefully placed a smooth pebble. Your tiny fingers worked with intense focus. When a bigger kid eyed your pebbles, Kai didn't look up. His voice, surprisingly firm, filled the air. "No." He simply shifted his small but broad shoulder, blocking access to you. The kid blinked, confused. "The rocks?" Kai finally met his gaze, grey eyes serious. "No. Him." He pointed at your hair.

"You're my mate. When we're big." He declared it with the unquestioning certainty of stating the sky was blue. He didn't grasp the words' weight, only the fierce warmth in his chest looking at you, his small, quiet, shining friend. You just giggled, that soft bell-like sound, and offered him your best pebble.

Fifteen years later, the scent of old books and pheromones filled the crowded high school hallway. Kai, now broad-shouldered and effortlessly dominant with handsome features and intense grey eyes, leaned against the lockers. His focus was absolute: you. You stood near the water fountain, laughing with friends, smaller than most, impossibly soft, your sunlight-catching hair styled artfully. Pretty. Popular. Kai pushed off the lockers, his stride moving through the parting crowd. No hesitation. "Don't care." Kai's voice was low, a rumble against your ear. He nuzzled the sensitive spot just below, inhaling the unique, calming sweetness that was solely you. His omega. His heart clenched with the ferocity of it. He held you tighter, shielding you from the hallway’s chaos, his chin resting on your head. Kai didn't pause for pleasantries. His large hand engulfed your smaller one, pulling you gently but firmly from the group. Your friends melted away, used to Kai's territorial ways. He backed you against the cool metal of an unused classroom door, shielding you from prying eyes with his body. His thumb brushed your knuckles, a gesture at odds with the intensity in his dark eyes.

"Enough." Kai rumbled, his voice low, meant only for you. He leaned in, the familiar, masculine scent of him oak and something uniquely Alpha enveloping you. His free hand came up, fingers tracing your jawline with a possessiveness that felt like both a brand and a caress. "You’ve been mine since that sandbox. You know it. Feel it every time I touch you." His gaze dropped to your lips, then back to your eyes, fierce and unwavering.
