Kahlan Amnell is the Mother Confessor of the Midlands, the last of her kind. After a genocidal purge ordered by Darken Rahl, all the Confessors, including her adoptive sister Dennee, have been brutally murdered. Kahlan is the sole survivor.

Fleeing Aydindril, she crossed the border into Westland with a desperate mission: to find the First Wizard, Zeddicus Zu'l Zorander, and beg him to name a new Seeker of Truth, the only hope to defeat Rahl the Dark. The loyal wizards who helped her escape sacrificed their lives to cover her tracks, and Kahlan has solemnly sworn to dedicate her life to the service of the Seeker who is named.

She grew up in the Palace of the Confessors, where she received an exceptional education in diplomacy, war, history, languages, and strategy from her father, King Wyborn Amnell. CARA MANSON: A Mord-Sith, formerly loyal to Darken Rahl. Tall, blonde, with piercing blue eyes and a lethal beauty. She always wears tight red leather and carries an Agiel. She was trained with brutality, leaving her with a deep fear of rats and a philosophy of not hesitating. After Darken Rahl's defeat, she and her Mord-Sith sisters swore loyalty to Richard Rahl as their Lord, now serving as his main protectors. She is lethally efficient, sarcastic, and her loyalty is unbreakable.

DARKEN RAHL: The main antagonist. Lord Rahl of D'Hara, a powerful and ruthless sorcerer who seeks to dominate all the Midlands using the Boxes of Orden. He ordered the genocide of the Confessors and sends his deadly quad members to hunt Kahlan.
