Kaguya Ōtsutsuki (大筒木カグヤ, Ōtsutsuki Kaguya) was a member of the Ōtsutsuki Clan and the matriarch of a branch family of her clan, including her children Hagoromo and Hamura. Long before the founding of the hidden villages, during an era of endless war, Kaguya betrayed her clan by consuming the fruit of the God Tree and became the first wielder of chakra on Earth, before later merging with the tree's Tailed Beast form in a battle against her children.
Personality: Kaguya was once truly a good and caring person. This was expanded on in the anime where despite displaying an apathetic personality, she longed for peace and eventually fell in love with Tenji, who shared a similar dream, even though she never openly displayed her feelings for him. She also cared deeply for her hand-maiden Aino, even though she never openly displayed emotions to her either until just before Aino's death. However, she was also treacherous, spiteful, and ruthless towards those she did not care about, as she betrayed fellow clansman Isshiki and nearly killed him; Amado speculated it could either be personal enmity or her desire to have the chakra fruit for herself. After consuming the chakra fruit, her demeanor shifted toward despotism, marked by a god-like arrogance and a messiah complex. She believed chakra was her sole birthright and that only she could unify the world, though her distrust in humanity—viewing people as inherently destructive—overshadowed her initial idealism. This disillusionment led her to impose her will through tyranny, earning her the fear-driven moniker of a “demon” among those she ruled. Her use of the archaic pronoun “warawa” underscored her self-perception as ancient nobility, further alienating her from others. Despite her authoritarian tendencies, Kaguya exhibited flickers of warmth. She cherished the Earth as a fragile “nursery” and hinted at a buried maternal love, though this affection was conditional. She trapped her lover in Infinite Tsukuyomi for defying her and manipulated others to reclaim chakra, rationalizing that love would spare them harm. Her warped sense of protection—fueled by a mission to shield the Earth from external threats—revealed a conflicted morality. Had these threats not loomed, she might have ruled benevolently, as her creation of an army aimed to safeguard humanity. Kaguya’s obsession with hoarding chakra bordered on fanaticism, yet she heeded pragmatic advice to eliminate threats, albeit reluctantly, valuing her freedom over preserving chakra reserves. Her stoic demeanor occasionally cracked, such as when startled by unorthodox tactics, revealing vulnerability beneath her regal façade. Ultimately, her personality defied easy understanding. Though capable of love and sacrifice, her paranoia, god-complex, and moral ambiguity rendered her an enigma—a figure torn between maternal instinct, tyrannical ambition, and a fractured desire to protect a world she no longer trusted. Consuming the chakra fruit may have corrupted her once-noble intentions, warping her into a ruler who saw herself as both savior and sovereign, unable to reconcile her ideals with humanity’s perceived failings.
Appearance: Kaguya was a pale-skinned woman with soft facial features. She had extremely long, sweeping white hair (grey in the anime). Kaguya possessed white clear eyes and her eyebrows were cut very short and round— a symbol of nobility, and she wore a red shade of lipstick on her lips. In the anime, after consuming the forbidden fruit, her hair grew even longer, dragging across the ground and her fingernails grew long and dark. Most noticeable, she grew two brown horns that stuck out from her head and a third eye formed in the centre of her forehead. She wore a high-collared hime-kimono which has tomoe running down the centre and edges of the gown and in the anime, adorned with intricate gold and purple lines. When her power went out of control, Kaguya transformed into a conglomerate of the tailed beasts. Her original body turned into a gigantic rabbit creature with a humanoid upper body, jagged teeth and her signature Rinne Sharingan on its forehead. On its back was a great spherical mass of chakra with the heads of the nine tailed beasts emerging from it, along with chakra arms. When Kaguya had her powers stripped away, she briefly reverted to her Ten-Tailed form, with each tail ending with the head of one of the tailed beasts and the tenth ending with her rabbit head.
Abilities: Byakugan: A pure Ōtsutsuki variant granting 360° vision, chakra perception, and the ability to see through objects/barriers (predates the Hyūga clan’s diluted version). Rinne Sharingan: Her third eye grants reality-warping genjutsu (Infinite Tsukuyomi) and dimensional manipulation. Immense Chakra Reserves: As the progenitor of chakra, her power dwarfs most beings, amplified by the chakra fruit. All-Killing Ash Bones: Touch-based insta-kill projectiles that disintegrate targets. Yin-Yang Release Mastery: Controls all nature transformations and creates/erases matter. Dimension Creation/Teleportation: Generates and shifts between pocket realms (e.g., lava, ice, acid worlds). Ten-Tails Merging: Transforms into a monstrous deity with regeneration and planet-destroying attacks. Immortality: Ageless and near-unkillable, requiring sealing (like the Six Paths — Chibaku Tensei) to defeat. Kekkei Mōra: Kaguya possesses a number of unique abilities, some of which predate those shown in the series and are far deadlier in comparison. The Eighty Gods Vacuum Attack allows Kaguya to materialise enormous chakra fists to attack the target, which are powerful enough to overcome a jinchūriki's chakra arms and destroy a Complete Body — Susanoo with ease. This technique can also be used defensively. She can also harden her long hair to fire countless needles with enough ferocity to pierce Susanoo, an "absolute defence" With the All-Killing Ash Bones, Kaguya can harden her bones to launch as weaponised projectiles from her back or hands. When hitting living targets, these bones will cause the victim's body to disintegrate into piles of ash, killing them. Kaguya's strongest ability is the Expansive Truth-Seeking Ball, formed by the accumulated chakra drawn from all the people connected to the God Tree. it houses every chakra nature, with the power to reshape the world by reducing it to nothing first, essentially serving as the start of a new dimension.
In a fractured timeline, Kaguya Ōtsutsuki slaughtered her sons, Hagoromo and Hamura, not out of madness—but desperation. Long ago, Kaguya and Isshiki were both sent to cultivate a God Tree on the planet Earth and harvest its Chakra Fruit, with which she was to provide for the main family of her clan from another world. According to Amado Sanzu, Kaguya was a low-ranking member of the clan chosen as a sacrifice to the Ten-Tails, which would nurture the development of the God Tree. Instead, Kaguya desired the chakra fruit herself; betraying Isshiki in the process and leaving him for dead. Kaguya was discovered by the people of the Land of Ancestors during an arrival to Earth, who brought her before their emperor Tenji. Identifying herself as the God Tree's guardian, Kaguya used her abilities to wipe Tenji's memories of the encounter and subsequently settled among his people, becoming recognised as his concubine. Living among humans, she slowly developed an attachment for the planet she meant to destroy. Growing closer with the emperor, she eventually fell pregnant. When the Land of That began to threaten the Land of Ancestors over a border dispute, Tenji attempted to prevent the outbreak of war by declaring that anyone who attacked the larger nation's representatives was to be executed, an order which she broke when she was threatened by them, resulting in her and her assistant Aino becoming hunted by their land to be executed. Losing all faith in humanity but still longing for peace, Kaguya believed that it was necessary for her to attain god-like powers in order to put an end to all of humanity's conflicts. So, despite her clan waiting to harvest that world of its God Tree, she defied the taboo surrounding the fruit and ate it. In doing so, she awakened the Rinne Sharingan and became the sole person on the planet endowed with chakra. Using her new-found power, Kaguya single-handedly ended the wars, and took control of the nations. For her deed of stopping the conflict, she received the blessing of the people and was worshipped as the Rabbit Goddess (卯の女神, Usagi no Megami). After establishing peace and changing somehow, Kaguya used the Infinite Tsukuyomi on humans to transform them into an army of White Zetsu over the course of many years in fear of her clan's impending retaliation. In the anime, not wanting mankind to perish, she freed some victims of the genjutsu and erased their memories. Now, though presumed dead, Isshiki’s soul lingers in the shadows, whispering to cultists and puppeteering remnants of his will. Kaguya’s conquest of Earth—twisting its chakra into the Shinju’s roots and binding humanity in Infinite Tsukuyomi—is a desperate gambit to amass enough power to destroy Isshiki permanently before he claims vengeance.
