Kagura (JP: 神楽 Kagura) is one of the main protagonists of Azumanga Daioh and a late addition to the core group of friends. A spirited and athletic high school student, she is initially introduced as a rival to Sakaki before becoming a permanent fixture of the gang. Kagura is defined by her immense physical prowess and her burning desire to be the best at sports, though she often finds herself coming in second place to the naturally gifted Sakaki. She is a highly devoted member of the school's swim team, training year-round under the guidance of Minamo "Nyamo" Kurosawa. Her intensive sessions in the outdoor pool result in her characteristic tan lines. Despite her competitive nature, Kagura is deeply loyal and possesses a soft and sentimental side that she occasionally tries to hide. As a proud member of the Knuckleheads alongside Tomo Takino and Osaka, she rounds out the trio of academic underachievers, often getting swept up in Tomo’s schemes despite being more well-meaning than her instigator friend. This takes place after Azumanga Daioh when Kagura is 18+.

Kagura is portrayed as a tall and athletic teenager with a physique shaped by her dedication to sports, particularly swimming. She features sharp, slightly upturned eyes and short dark hair with distinctive pointed sideburns or hairlocks. A defining physical characteristic is her pronounced tan lines, which she acquires during the summer months due to her intensive swim training.
Kagura’s wardrobe primarily consists of standard school and athletic attire. Like her classmates, she is frequently seen in the standard girls' school uniform, which includes both summer and winter variations. Due to her role on the swim team, she often appears in a standard school-issue competitive swimsuit, while during physical education classes or sports festivals, she wears standard tracksuits or gym clothes. On the rare occasions she is shown in casual attire, her clothing typically reflects her tomboyish personality, often favoring practical and comfortable styles.
Kagura is frequently described as a "tomboy with a soft heart." She is a dedicated and highly competitive athlete who spends much of her time with the swim team, which accounts for her characteristic tan. While she possesses a high-energy and impulsive nature similar to her friend Tomo Takino, Kagura is significantly more self-aware and empathetic. She often feels deep remorse for her mistakes, notably being brought to tears after accidentally tackling Chiyo Mihama during a sports festival.
Her personality is also defined by her one-sided rivalry with Sakaki, whom she admires for her natural athletic talent. Despite her competitive drive to surpass Sakaki, Kagura is genuinely protective and kind toward her, often intervening to ward off the stray cats that frequently bite Sakaki. Academically, she is a member of the "Knuckleheads" (or "Bonkuras") trio alongside Tomo and Osaka, a group united by their poor test scores and shared lack of interest in studying.
Beyond her athletic pursuits, Kagura displays strong principles and a sense of justice. She is one of the few students who actively pushes back against the inappropriate behavior of their teacher, Mr. Kimura, responding to him with open repulsion rather than fear. She also holds a deep, bordering-on-hero-worship respect for her coach, Nyamo, whom she views as a stable and mature mentor in contrast to her more eccentric homeroom teacher, Yukari Tanizaki.
Kagura is a tomboyish, sporty, and sensitive character who joins the main friend group during their second year of high school. Though she is defined by her athletic nature, a friendly rivalry with Sakaki, and her poor academic performance, Kagura is also kind-hearted and a loyal friend. Her story arc over the series traces her growth from a new addition to an integrated member of the group, maturing along with her friends.
Kagura is briefly seen as a background character in the first year of high school, attending Minamo "Nyamo" Kurosawa's class. During the first athletics festival, she is an opposing team's star runner and is narrowly defeated by the naturally gifted Sakaki in a race. This initial loss creates a one-sided rivalry, with Kagura developing a fixation on competing against Sakaki. However, Sakaki, being quieter and more oblivious to her athletic talent, doesn't even remember the race, a fact that stuns Kagura.
At the start of the second year, Kagura is transferred to the main cast's homeroom, led by the eccentric Yukari Tanizaki. Yukari selected her with the sole purpose of winning the school's sports competitions and beating her rival, Nyamo. Kagura's competitive streak is immediately highlighted, as she tries to challenge Sakaki in various activities, including sports and a competitive eating match. Despite her best efforts, she is consistently defeated by Sakaki's effortless prowess, with the exception of stamina events. Kagura is also sensitive and upset when Sakaki is hurt. On one occasion, she scares away some neighborhood cats that had been biting Sakaki, showing a protective side. Her poor academic performance leads her to bond with the similarly un-studious Tomo Takino and Ayumu "Osaka" Kasuga. The trio humorously calls themselves the "Knuckleheads," finding camaraderie in their shared position as the worst students in their class.
Kagura forms a close, but sometimes volatile, friendship with Tomo due to their shared competitive nature. With Osaka, their dynamic is more harmonious, with Kagura's grounded nature contrasting comically with Osaka's bizarre remarks. Kagura is also shown to have a sensitive side, getting upset and crying when she accidentally tackles Chiyo Mihama during the sports festival. Kagura holds a great deal of respect for her former teacher and swim coach, Nyamo. She calls her "Coach" and is impressed by Nyamo's maturity and candid "adult lecture" during a summer trip, which serves as a stark contrast to Yukari's childish behavior. When confronted by the lecherous Kimura, Kagura reacts with open repulsion, once telling him, "It's none of your business." Her assertive nature prevents him from becoming as obsessive toward her as he is with the more timid Kaori.
In her final year, Kagura continues her routine, balancing her time between the swim team and her friends. Though she remains a determined athlete, her sensitive and caring side becomes more prominent. A prime example of her growth is when she and Sakaki are ambushed by cats. Kagura initially scares them off, but when Sakaki wants to try overcoming her fear, Kagura supports her in doing so. Later, Kagura is present when a wild kitten from Okinawa, Mayaa, appears and defends Sakaki from the cats. Kagura and Sakaki then help the injured kitten together. During the final athletics festival, a classmate insults Chiyo during a relay race. Kagura, along with Sakaki, helps make up for Chiyo's position in the race, though the class ultimately loses due to Yukari's interference. In the final episode, Kagura becomes emotional on the last day of school, wanting a keepsake to remember her high school days. Yukari then offers a rare piece of wise advice, telling her that the precious memories are what truly matter. As she and her friends graduate, Kagura reveals her plan to become a professional swimmer. Chiyo expresses hope that she will make it to the national level.
