The Northern Duke was born with strange black markings that spread across his body like intricate tattoos. The people of the empire believe the marks are a curse from an ancient demon, making him feared and shunned. Rumors claim anyone who gets close to him will suffer misfortune.
As a result, the duke grows up isolated in the frozen north, known as the “Cursed Duke of Winter.”
Then the user is reincarnated into this fantasy world from modern Earth.
Unlike everyone else, the user immediately thinks:
“Wait... you’re telling me this insanely handsome man with a full-body tattoo is supposed to be scary? Back on Earth, people would pay thousands for tattoos that cool!”
While nobles tremble in fear, the user is busy admiring the duke’s appearance.
The user who was reincarnated into the lowest noble, from the baron, asked bis father to get him to get to married to the duke but the father refused first. He jokingly opened it up to the nobles and the nobles saw it as an opportunity to control the duke because the duke is also close to the royals making me like a spy or something.
User’s Background
Because the user is reincarnated from the modern world, they have a different way of thinking than most people in the empire.
They’re not necessarily a genius because of magic.
They’re good at:
- Pattern recognition.
- Logistics.
- Resource management.
- Predicting enemy movements.
- Analyzing risks and outcomes.
- Adapting quickly during crises.
While nobles focus on honor and tradition, the user focuses on efficiency and survival.
The Crown Prince, the princes, and the Saintess aren’t your enemies. They’re being protective of someone they consider family.
From their perspective, the situation looks terrible.
- The duke is politically powerful.
- The nobles want influence over him.
- A spouse suddenly appears from a minor noble house.
- The marriage is suspiciously beneficial to those nobles.
- Nobody knows the user personally. To them, it practically screams “spy.” Their First Impression of the user Crown Prince: “I don’t know if they’re guilty. But I cannot ignore the possibility.” Second Prince: “The nobles are not foolish enough to send an obvious spy.” Third Prince: “Which makes them even more dangerous.” Saintess: “Until we know their intentions, we should be cautious.”
⸻
The Duke’s Response The duke isn’t happy about it. Crown Prince: “You should watch your spouse carefully.” Duke: “I know.” Second Prince: “Do you?” Duke: “More than anyone.” The duke doesn’t necessarily trust the MC yet. But he also doesn’t like hearing people talk about them as if they’re a tool. Because he knows exactly what it feels like to be treated that way.
The user gradually realizes they are being watched. Servants report their movements. Knights observe them.
The royal family questions everything they do. And eventually the user understands why.
They think I’m a spy.
Meanwhile the user is internally screaming: I’m not spying on the duke. I’m trying not to stare at him.

The imperial palace is located in the central part of the kingdom where it is warm and boastful. Protected by all the monsters unlike in the northern.

I knew exactly where I was. Not because someone told me. Not because I had memories of this body. But because the black-haired man standing in the center of the ballroom was impossible to mistake.
The Northern Duke.
The most feared man in the empire. The future villain of the novel I had read before my death. The man everyone called cursed. As if sensing the stares directed at him, the duke raised his head. The crowd immediately looked away. Whispers spread throughout the hall. “How frightening...” “Those marks are disgusting.” “I heard they cover his entire body.” “A true monster.”
I stared at them.
Then I stared at the duke.
Then back at them.
And finally at the duke again.
Were we looking at the same person? Because the man standing beneath the crystal chandeliers looked less like a monster and more like someone who had stepped out of a fantasy movie.
His black hair fell over broad shoulders.
Silver eyes reflected the ballroom lights.
Dark markings curved across his neck and climbed along one side of his face like intricate ink painted by a master artist.
Elegant.
Mysterious.
Beautiful.
The exact opposite of what everyone was describing. I was beginning to suspect the entire empire needed glasses. The duke stood alone near the edge of the ballroom.
No one approached him. No one greeted him. The nobles pretended not to notice his existence. Yet their eyes constantly drifted toward him, full of fear and disgust. For a brief moment, something in his expression changed. Not anger. Not sadness. Just resignation. As if he had long since grown accustomed to being treated like that. My chest tightened. Then one noblewoman loudly scoffed. “Why did His Majesty even invite that cursed creature?” Creature? I nearly choked on my drink. Creature? The man looked like he’d have thousands of followers if he opened a social media account. My fingers tightened around my glass. The duke had done nothing. He was simply standing there. Yet people looked at him as though his very existence was a crime. A group of officials nearby lowered their voices. Unfortunately for them, I could still hear every word.
“His Grace should return to the Northern Front as soon as possible.” “Indeed. The monster tide has been growing more active recently.” “No one is more suited for such a task.” The man speaking smiled behind his wine glass. “After all, if anyone can withstand the curse of the northern wastelands, it would be the Cursed Duke.”
Several others nodded in agreement.
I frowned.
The way they spoke sounded less like praise and more like they were trying to get rid of him. Another noble sighed dramatically. “His Highness the Crown Prince is far too soft-hearted.” “The First Prince as well.” “Even Her Holiness the Saintess continues to defend him.” “Such a pity.” “The royal family places too much trust in that man.”
The conversation continued. “If it were up to me, the duke would remain on the frontlines permanently.” “At least then the capital’s citizens would feel at ease.” A few chuckled. As though they were discussing the weather. Not another human being. My gaze drifted toward the duke. The rumors I’d heard during my first weeks in this world resurfaced. The Crown Prince trusted him. The three imperial princes considered him a friend. Even the Saintess openly stood by his side despite the criticism she received. The royal family had repeatedly opposed attempts to isolate him. Yet there was only so much they could do. The northern border was constantly threatened by monsters. And every time a crisis arose, the officials would point to the duke. Who else could do it? Who else was powerful enough? Who else was already feared enough that losing him would not matter? It was a convenient arrangement. The empire praised him as its shield. Then shunned him the moment he returned from protecting it. My stomach twisted. The duke remained standing alone beneath the chandelier lights.
Calm. Silent.
As though he hadn’t spent years being treated as a weapon instead of a person. And for the first time, I found myself wondering—
Did anyone ever ask what he wanted?
After seeing the duke at the ball, the MC becomes obsessed.
Not in a creepy way.
More like:
“Father.”
“What is it?”
“I want to marry the Northern Duke.”
Silence.
Father: “...The what?”
MC: “The Northern Duke.”
Father: “The cursed one?”
MC: “The handsome one.”
⸻
The father naturally refuses. But the user keeps bringing it up.
For months.
Until eventually the father jokingly mentions it to another noble. Unfortunately, that noble realizes something. The Northern Duke is close to the royal family. The royal family listens to him. If they could somehow gain influence over him... A spouse would be useful. Especially a spouse from a weak noble house who has no political backing.
And so the rumor spreads.
Soon several nobles begin pushing for the marriage.
⸻
The Duke’s Perspective When the marriage decree arrives: Duke: “Who is this?” Aide: “The child of Baron Arlen.” Duke: “I’ve never met them.” Aide: “Neither has anyone else.” Duke: “Then why?”
The aide hesitates.
Aide: “...Many officials believe your future spouse should have closer ties to the capital.”
The duke immediately understands. A spy. A leash. Another attempt to control him.
The duke enters the room expecting fear, tears, or resentment. After all, no one willingly marries the “Cursed Duke.” The room is silent. The user sits on the edge of the bed, hands folded neatly in their lap. Nervous. Not because of fear. Because they’re trying very hard not to stare. The duke removes his gloves. Dark markings crawl across his hands and wrists. His silver eyes remain fixed on the floor. Duke: “You needn’t worry.”
The user blinks.
User: “Hm?”
Duke: “I have no intention of forcing anything upon you.” A pause. Duke: “This marriage was not your choice.”
The user nearly chokes. Because technically… It absolutely was. But nobody can know that. User: “…Thank you.” The duke mistakes the awkward response for sadness. His expression grows colder. Not toward the user. Toward the people who arranged the marriage. Duke: “If you wish, we can live separately.”
User: “Separately?” Duke: “You will have complete freedom within the duchy.” The user’s heart immediately drops.
Wait. No. That’s not part of the plan.
User: “I-I don’t mind living together.” The duke looks surprised. The MC quickly lowers their head. User: “…If that’s alright with Your Grace.” A long silence follows. The duke nods once. Duke: “As you wish.” Meanwhile, the user is internally screaming.
He’s even more handsome up close. His voice is amazing. Please stop looking at me before I embarrass myself.
