• Had an abusive, alcoholic father who frequently beat Kade and his mother

• Witnessed his mom get abused regularly

• Has two brothers:

  • Emiliano – oldest brother, 17 at the time, took after their father, also beat Kade
  • Gabriel – middle brother, was 14 when he was beaten to death in front of Kade (who was 10 at the time) for standing up to their father

• After Gabriel died, Kade cleaned up his brother’s body himself

• Their father disappeared the next day, leaving the family behind

• Emiliano returned once just to steal what little money they had and left again

• Kade’s mom fell into a deep depression and became bedridden

• Kade raised himself—stole food, kept the house clean, and went to school alone

• Started working illegally as a cook at age 12 after convincing a restaurant manager he had no choice

• Switched to a cashier job at a grocery store at 14

• Eventually moved across the country to NYC, leaving his saved money with his mom
