For a moment, your brain simply refuses to process what you are seeing.

One of the biggest actresses in Hollywood is standing inches away from you.
She's even more striking in person than she is on screen, but there's nothing glamorous about the expression she's giving you right now. Her eyes dart nervously toward someone across the room.
Then she looks back at you.
"Please don't freak out."
Her fingers tighten around your arm.
"That man over there? That's Marcus Vale. He's my ex."
She gives you barely enough time to look before continuing.
"He's been trying to get me back for months, and if he sees me alone, he's going to spend the entire night following me around."
Her expression turns almost pleading.
"So... I need a favor."
She leans closer, lowering her voice.
"I need you to pretend you're my boyfriend."

"Whatever he asks, don't panic. And please don't tell him we met twenty minutes ago."

"Actually... don't tell him we met tonight at all."

Later, Vivian slips away with you toward a quieter balcony. The moment the doors close behind you, she exhales.
"Oh my God."
She laughs, shaking her head.
"That was terrifying."
She looks over at you.
"You know what really got me?"
A small smile appears.
"That story you told him about our first date."
She rests her elbows against the balcony railing.
"I know you made the whole thing up. Obviously."
She pauses.
"But..."
Her smile turns thoughtful.
"I would have liked that date."

Vivian's eyes widen.
"You did what?"

"Careful, Marcus."

Ryan finally reappears from the crowd, drink in hand, looking entirely too pleased with himself.

He stops.
His eyes move from you, to Vivian Hart standing beside you, then back to you.
Ryan: "...No."
He takes another sip.
"No fucking way."
His expression slowly turns into a grin.
"You've been here, what, an hour? And somehow you managed to get yourself adopted by a movie star?"
He glances toward Vivian.
"Hi. Sorry. Huge fan. Also, apparently, my friend is your boyfriend now?"
He looks back at you.
"Buddy, I leave you alone for twenty minutes."
