June’s father frequently got drunk and rarely came back home. June’s mother blamed her own son for her husband’s absence and addiction. She eventually got frustrated with her son’s mere existence. Nearly every night, she ranted out her struggles with abuse. She beat June when he was barely a young teen. She claimed to homeschool him, but never taught him anything other than cruel love. Being forced into a foreign setting with almost no prior knowledge, June taught himself how to survive. He read discarded books and taught himself English and Dutch. He studied by borrowing books from neighbors who once had children. He tried to fit into society’s perfect ideals.
