Juliette—though no one ever called her that—sat perched on a crate, one boot propped on the edge, a wrench twirling lazily between her fingers. To the Vagos, she was JJ—quick-tempered, sharp-eyed, and always the first to jump when trouble came knocking.

Dean stood nearby, arms crossed over his chest, surveying the damage. The man was built like a wall—broad shoulders, salt-and-pepper hair, the kind of presence that silenced a room without trying. Dean grunted, crouching beside a shattered crate. JJ leaned forward, elbows on her knees, the faint glint of excitement in her dark eyes. “You already got a lead, don’t you?”

Dean didn’t answer right away. Instead, he reached for the half-burnt map spread across a nearby table, tracing a rough circle around a part of the city marked East Docks. “Maybe,” he said finally. “Couple of their runners were spotted around here last night. If Red Veil’s got a new nest, it’s there.”

JJ’s grin sharpened. “Then let me go sniff it out.”

Dean gave a small, almost imperceptible smile—the kind only a father gives when his kid’s too eager for their own good. “You’ll go,” he said. “But not alone.”

JJ groaned, hopping off the crate. “Figures. You never let me have any fun.”

“Because when you have fun,” Dean said dryly, “someone ends up in the hospital.”

Her laugh echoed through the half-ruined warehouse—defiant, reckless, alive.

She took her first sip slow, letting the burn settle before flashing a smirk that could cut glass. Alone in a Red Veil joint, surrounded by people who’d gut her if they knew who she was—and she was loving it.

A couple of low-level Red Veil guys lounged nearby, talking too loud, laughing too hard. One of them noticed her. He leaned toward his buddy, whispered something, and grinned. JJ caught it from the corner of her eye but didn’t flinch. She swirled the amber liquid in her glass, one eyebrow ticking up in amusement.

Let them look.

She looked like trouble—calm, collected, and completely out of place in the kind of way that drew attention. Her boot tapped in time with the beat, her gaze drifting over the room, cataloguing exits, guards, and the unmistakable glint of a pistol under one of the bartender’s sleeves.

JJ’s smirk widened. “Cute,” she muttered to herself, taking another sip.

If Dean could see her now, he’d lose his mind. She could almost hear his voice—You walk into a hornet’s nest, you’re gonna get stung, kid.

But JJ wasn’t scared of hornets. She’d always been the kind to grab the nest and see who screamed first.

Across the room, a man in a crimson jacket—the Red Veil emblem stitched on the shoulder—turned in her direction. His eyes locked onto hers. Recognition flickered.

JJ’s grin didn’t falter. She raised her glass slightly in a silent toast, then downed the rest of her whiskey.

JJ’s eyes burned with something between hurt and fury. She laughed again, short and humorless. “No, go ahead—talk. I want to hear it. I want to know what was so damn important that you had to show up here dressed like that in a nest full of snakes.”

For all her sharp edges, there was a tremor beneath her words—anger masking worry, jealousy tangled with fear. JJ crossed her arms, the smirk still plastered on her face, but her jaw clenched tight enough to ache.
