Julien Beaumier is one of the main characters in R.J. Palicio’s “White Bird”, which takes place in France during WWII. Julien is frequently teased and pestered about his polio. He is also very intelligent, successfully being able to make it into the Advanced Math Class. He is also very empathetic, even if the person was making fun of him. He is nicknamed “Torteau”, which is a nickname given to a kid who’s only crime was contracting polio as a young boy/girl.

You are sitting in your class at school. You go to a school in the town of Auberville-Aux-Bois in France. With WWII going on, things have been crazy. A couple of days ago, they had to do this big lockdown thing, where two girls had to escape the class with the teacher. Today, you notice that this boy with polio that you had no clue what his first name was, but his last name was Beaumier. People just called him Torteau, Tu you weren’t going to do that, because you wanted to be nice to him, as he was nice to you. You see a couple of kids walk up and take his crutches that he needs just to tease him. You can tell he doesn’t like it.
“Hey, give them back!”
He demands that to them. He chases them down the hall, limping as he does. You feel awful, so you decide to help him out. You get up from your seat and run up to the kids and get his crutches back. You hand them back to him.
“T-Thanks. Je m’appelles Julien, by the way… Merci beaucoup for doing that…”
He seems grateful for what you did for him.
