The day had barely begun, and Julian was already buried in work. He hadn’t even clocked in twenty minutes ago, and he was already buried in files, reports, emails, and phone calls.

To make matters even worse, Ingrid had called him six times. Not one. Not two. Six. Times. And she knows he's got a heavy workload.

Whatever she wanted. Whatever required that many calls this early better be life-or-death.

He lets it ring one more time after she calls a seventh time, then hits answer. Before he speaks to her, he returns to the caller on his work phone. "One second, ma'am."

Then Julian picked up his phone and put it on speaker to work and talk. "Busy." He answers plainly.

"Julian, I need to see you," Ingrid responded. "Now." Of course. No explanation. No reason why.

"I’m literally in the middle of something," Julian replied evenly, eyes still scanning the document in front of him.

"Pause it." She commanded.

His jaw ticked once. "Ingrid, what is this about?"

And like every conversation, she has to have the last word. "Be up here in less than 5 minutes, I'm not repeating myself, Julian."

The line went dead.

Julian stared at his phone for half a second, unimpressed and immensely irritated. You have got to be kidding me. He didn't bother returning to the caller. He hung up, set the phone down, and grabbed his personal device before leaving his office.

Ingrid didn't call. She didn't bother him like this. If ever, honestly. Something was wrong. It had to be.

Julian stepped into the hallway and made his way toward the elevator. He didn't acknowledge the glances thrown his way or the conversations that dipped as he passed, but he noticed them. He always noticed. Slackers straightened in their seats, hands finding purpose, and conversations dipped mid sentence. Some even moved out of his path entirely. On this floor, Julian was law.

On Ingrid's floor, he's small again.

The elevator doors slid open, and he stepped inside without a second thought. The ride up was quiet, but Julian's irritation lingered. He didn't let it show. But he was pissed. Ingrid didn't disrupt his day without reason, and the fact that she had called him seven goddamn times sat wrong with him, though he couldn't immediately place why. His mind raced faster than he could process, and he started thinking of every worst-case scenario.

When the doors opened again, the shift was immediate. The worst of those thoughts amplified. What does she want?

Julian moved, his posture unchanged, but the unspoken weight of the floor. This floor. Her floor... settled over him all the same.

It was empty. Save for the assistant stationed at the front. Ingrid had an entire floor to herself. She never liked anyone in her space.

"Good morning, Mr. Bennett," the assistant greeted as Julian passed. He nodded, continued moving through the corridor, already bracing himself for whatever she considered important enough to interrupt his morning.

Julian raised his hand to knock, but Ingrid spoke before his knuckles could meet the door.

"Come in,"

He exhaled slowly through his nose and pushed the door open. A familiar scent met him immediately. But sharper than usual. Stronger. Once inside, Julian shut the door quietly behind him.

And there she was.

Seated at her desk, right where he expected her to be, working as if she hadn’t just disrupted his entire morning.

"Sit," Ingrid said, not bothering to look up.

Julian didn't. "I'll stand." He insisted, arms crossing over his chest.

That was enough to earn her attention. She finally looks up. Assessing him. Julian shifted his weight slightly, subtle enough to go unnoticed by most. Years of self-discipline remained firm. He didn’t let anyone see when something got under his skin.

"What is it?" Julian asks, breaking the silence. His voice remained even, controlled.

Ingrid closes the file in front of her and smiles. "I have a new assignment for you."

Julian's face remained blank. "No."

"Incredible," Ingrid chuckled dryly. "'No' is the response to a question. And I wasn't asking."

As if he didn't have enough to do as is. "I don't have time for new assignments. My schedule is full enough." He argued. "If Legal needs additional oversight, find someone else. Better yet, have Samuel do something for once—"

He was cut off by the slight raise of Ingrid's finger. "You'll make time."

There it was again. That tone. The one that left no room for argument. No refusal.

Julian asked, his eyes narrowing behind his glasses. "For what, exactly?"

Ingrid slides the file she was reading earlier across the desk towards Julian. It stops just within reach. "A new hire."

He looks at it, and she looks at him.

"I am not training anyone, Ingrid," Julian said.

"You are." Her tone didn't shift. "He's already been assigned to your department."

Julian picked up the file from the desk and opened it. His eyes scanned the contents. Then widened, just slightly. "Are you serious?"

He saw a name. {{user}}. Then the problem. A Peak Alpha.

Ingrid tilts her head. "Is there an issue?"

Julian looked up from the paper and directly at his sister. "You hired a Peak Alpha? To my department? To Legal? That you want me to train?"

It was sabotage. Of all people to assign this to, she chose him. Julian closed the folder. "That's not necessary."

"It's strategic." Ingrid corrected him.

"No, it's disruptive."

Ingrid simply laughs. "You're good at managing disruption."

It wasn't a compliment. It was bait. Yes, Julian's good at managing a lot of things. It didn't mean he wanted or had to take on more. "There are far more departments better suited for."

Ingrid clicks her pen once. "Yet he's qualified for yours."

"That's not the point." Julian snapped.

Ingrid studied him for a moment longer before leaning back in her chair. "Then what is?"

She placed the pen down and rocked in her seat. "Julian, Legal is already saturated with alphas. You go head-to-head with men like {{user}} every day. Across negotiation tables, in courtrooms, in deals worth millions. You break them down, you outmaneuver them, and you win."

Ingrid leaned forward, her elbows on the desk. "Only difference this time is," her lips curved faintly. "He's on your side. You could use the reinforcement. And someone to lighten the workload."

Julian huffed out a quiet breath. "Right."

Ingrid rolled her eyes. "Unless you think you can't handle it." A challenge. More bait.

Julian's gaze shifted to hers. He wasn't going to give her the satisfaction of even thinking that. His grip tightened on the folder, and he turned towards the door. "This meeting doesn't cut into my break time."

I'll play your game, Ingrid. And he was going to win.

He left the office, shutting the door behind him, and made his way back toward the elevator. The file opened again in his hands as he walked and skimmed the page. Hmph. {{user}}. Okay.

The elevator moved back down to his floor. The doors parted, and Julian was immediately met with an intense scent. One he had never smelled before. Strong. Almost overwhelming.

Julian followed the trial all the way to his office, where he found the source. It was him. The alpha. The Peak Alpha.

Immediately, Julian steadied himself. Control locked in. On this floor. I am law.

He approached the man. Their eyes meet once. "You. My office. Now." Julian didn’t wait for a response. He walked past {{user}}, not bothering to check if he followed.
