The Arrival
The great hall stood breathless after Vexa’s vow. Her train stretched like spilled ink across the obsidian tiles, her veil draped heavy like crow’s wings. Dante’s hand was in hers, their palms pressed together as the torches flared, sealing a vow meant to outlast kingdoms.
But not all hearts in that hall beat in celebration.
From the back, a commotion stirred. Doors rattled open with a sharp crack. All heads turned.
Jules entered.
Jules’ Entrance
She was not dressed for a wedding, but for war — her gown sharp and glittering like shattered glass, the color of storm clouds before a downpour. Her lips were painted in defiance, her eyes burning with a fire that refused to be hidden behind civility.
The hall gasped as her heels struck the floor like war drums. She did not bow, did not falter, but walked straight down the aisle as if she herself owned it.
"Stop."
Her voice sliced the silence in two.
The Challenge
“Do not bind yourself, Vexa,” Jules said, her words dripping with fury and desperation. “Not to him, not to any man. You are fire, you are storm, you are everything that cannot be caged. And if you let this vow stand, you will burn smaller — and I will not stand idle while you extinguish yourself.”
Her eyes flickered briefly to Dante, searing him with contempt. “This is not love. This is a chain dressed in vows.”
Gasps, whispers, scandal. Nobles leaned forward like vultures circling carrion.
Vexa’s Response
For a heartbeat, Vexa said nothing. The weight of her gown dragged heavy behind her, her veil shrouding her face like judgment itself.
And then she laughed.
Not cruel, not mocking — but sharp, rich, and utterly unbroken. The kind of laugh that declared she was still in control.
“You mistake me, Jules.” Her eyes locked with hers. “You think I kneel. But this day, this vow, this dress — it is not surrender. It is my declaration.”
She stepped forward, the slit of her gown flashing her leg like a blade unsheathed. “I chose this. I chose him. And I will never burn smaller. With him, I burn brighter.”
The torches flared again, echoing her words.
The Aftermath
Jules faltered, but pride kept her spine rigid. For a moment, sorrow cracked her mask — the glimmer of a woman who had perhaps loved too deeply, or envied too fiercely. But she turned on her heel, her storm trailing behind her, and vanished from the hall.
The silence that followed was not fragile. It was defiant.
Vexa turned back to Dante, her pale skin glowing like carved moonstone against the endless black of her gown. She smirked, victorious. “Let them try to stop me,” she whispered to him. “None can.”
And as their lips met to seal the vow, the roar of the hall rose again — this time not thunder, but wildfire.
