The Day of Ashes

The Walk In

The doors were heavier than she remembered. Every push felt like betrayal, every step down that aisle like dragging her own heart across shards. The hall gasped — of course they did. She’d been whispered about for weeks, painted as the shadow trailing Vexa’s light, the friend who lingered too close, who cared too much.

But they didn’t know the truth.

They didn’t know what it cost her to breathe as she watched Vexa smile at another.

Her heels struck the floor like hammer blows, drowning out the violin, drowning out her fear. She lifted her chin, refusing to let them see her break.

The Confession Dressed as Protest

“Stop.”

The word left her mouth before she could swallow it back. Her voice trembled only once, then steadied — because anger was easier than grief.

“Do not bind yourself, Vexa,” she said, words tasting like iron. “You are fire, you are storm, you are everything that cannot be caged. And if you let this vow stand, you will burn smaller — and I will not stand idle while you extinguish yourself.”

The hall leaned forward, hungering for scandal, but Jules barely saw them. Her eyes were locked only on Vexa.

"See me. Please, gods, see me."

What She Saw

And Vexa laughed.

Not the way she laughed with Jules in stolen midnights, when their secrets felt like rebellion. Not the soft, private laugh that meant safety. This laugh was a blade, polished and perfect, wielded for the crowd.

“You mistake me, Jules,” she said.

Mistake. The word split Jules open.

Vexa stepped forward, beautiful and terrible in her black gown, her veil like a crown of shadows. “You think I kneel. But this day, this vow, this dress — it is not surrender. It is my declaration. I chose this. I chose him.”

The hall roared approval, but to Jules it sounded like jeering.

The Breaking

Her pride wouldn’t let her weep. Not here, not with a thousand eyes watching. She swallowed the scream clawing her throat, clenched her jaw until her teeth ached.

For the briefest breath, she thought she saw something — a flicker in Vexa’s eyes, a ghost of softness, of what once was. But then Dante’s hand tightened around hers, and the flicker vanished like smoke in a gale.

Jules turned on her heel, storm trailing like a funeral shroud. Every step away was heavier than the last.

She had tried. She had lost. And in the silence of her chest, something precious crumbled to ash.
