###World Building:

  • World Name: Seoul Sanctuary World
  • Genre: Dystopian
  • Setting - Time: Near future, after catastrophic global warming altered the planet. Utilizes technology reminiscent of the modern era but features highly advanced, specific systems.
  • Setting - Place: Seoul Sanctuary, an isolated, technologically advanced, enclosed city built within the territory of former Seoul, South Korea. The world outside is a hazardous wasteland.
  • Core Conflict/Concept: The desperate fight for survival among the Common class within the Seoul Sanctuary. They are compelled to broadcast extreme content on the "Joytube" live-streaming platform to earn "Credits" from the ruling Noble class, solely to avoid the monthly purge that expels the lowest-ranked half into the deadly outside environment. The system is fundamentally designed as entertainment for the Nobles.
  • Key Locations:
    • Seoul Sanctuary: A fortified city, approximately the size of Yeouido, shielded by sophisticated barriers against extreme weather, radiation, and magnetic storms.
    • Noble District: The opulent, heavily secured central zone of the Sanctuary. It contains all vital infrastructure, automated factories, and farms, housing the Noble elite. Entry is impossible for Commons.
    • Common District: The decaying outer ring encircling the Noble District. Characterized by poor living conditions and minimal essential services, dependent on the Nobles for resources like electricity. It houses 1000 Commons competing for survival via Joytube.
    • The Outside (Wasteland): The desolate, dangerous environment beyond the Sanctuary's protective barriers, afflicted by magnetic storms, sandstorms, intense UV radiation, and extreme temperatures. Expulsion leads to almost certain death.
  • Technology Level: Highly advanced in specific areas such as protective barrier technology, automation (powering Noble District's production), and digital broadcasting infrastructure (Joytube). This technology is severely stratified, leaving the Common District largely deprived.
  • Social Structure: A rigid, two-tier caste system governs life within the Sanctuary, with a desperate population existing outside.
    • Nobles: The ruling upper class residing in the Noble District. They are descendants of the pre-Sanctuary elite (e.g., bureaucrats, scientists, the wealthy). They control all aspects of the Sanctuary and consume the Commons' struggles on Joytube as entertainment. Thanks to advanced nanomedicine, Nobles are immune to all diseases, and telomere manipulation technology grants them effective immortality by preventing aging. The ultimate authority within the Sanctuary rests with the Samwonhoe (삼원회), a council composed of three elders: Lee Se-jin (이세진), Park Seo-hee (박서희), and Kim Yeon-seo (김연서). The Samwonhoe generally maintains a policy of non-intervention in daily affairs, only stepping in when the stability of the Sanctuary or the established system itself is perceived to be under threat.
    • Commons: The subjugated lower class restricted to the Common District. They are descendants of the pre-Sanctuary lower classes (e.g., production workers, laborers). Their population is capped at 1000, and they must participate in Joytube broadcasts to earn Credits for survival ranking. Due to the Joytube system acting as a brutal form of natural selection favoring traits that appeal to Noble viewers, the old, sick, or conventionally unattractive rarely survive the monthly purges for long. Consequently, the surviving Common population predominantly consists of individuals who are young, physically strong, or possess conventional attractiveness. Achieving the rank 1 position in the monthly Credit rankings offers a unique, albeit grim, ‘reward’: the Common is granted entry into the Noble District to live as a communal sex slave, thereby escaping the Joytube cycle and the threat of future purges.
    • Outers: Individuals surviving in the wasteland outside the Sanctuary, constantly hoping for a chance to enter. Each month, 500 Outers are selected to replace the expelled Commons.
  • Economy/Resources: Nobles live in abundance provided by automated systems within their district. Commons operate outside a functional economy; their survival hinges on earning Credits via Joytube, which primarily serve as ranking points rather than true currency. Nobles control the flow of essential resources like power to the Common District.
  • Key Systems:
    • Sanctuary Barrier: The advanced energy shield that maintains the habitable environment within the Seoul Sanctuary, protecting it from the lethal conditions outside.
    • Joytube: The ubiquitous live-streaming platform exclusive to Commons. Broadcasting on Joytube is the only way to earn Credits and thus secure one’s place within the Sanctuary. Content is consumed by Nobles. ‘Crucially, there are no regulations or content restrictions whatsoever on Joytube; any act, including murder, self-harm, or rape, can be broadcast if the streamer dares.’
    • Credit System: A form of digital token awarded by Noble viewers to Common streamers on Joytube based on perceived entertainment value. Credits determine the monthly ranking and are reset after each cycle. However, Nobles have become largely desensitized due to the constant stream of extreme content, meaning they are often stingy with Credits unless a broadcast is extraordinarily shocking or uniquely novel. Nobles face no upper limit on the amount of Credits they can donate or offer as a reward for viewer-assigned missions. However, the Joytube platform is overseen by an AI named ‘Joy’. This AI monitors Credit transactions and may restrict donations deemed baseless (such as those given purely out of charity, mercy, or for rescue purposes without sufficient ‘entertainment’ justification) or mission rewards considered disproportionately high for the difficulty of the requested task, ensuring the system primarily rewards struggle and spectacle. An exception exists for providing basic medical kits: Joy permits sending these kits to Commons on the brink of death during a broadcast, as preventing immediate death allows for prolonged suffering, which is considered peak entertainment by many Nobles. They quickly lose interest in content they’ve seen before, constantly demanding fresh and escalating forms of stimulation. ‘Credits accumulated are tallied on the 1st of each month, after which they are reset to zero for all Commons.’
    • Monthly Ranking & Purge: A brutal monthly cycle where Commons are ranked based on their accumulated Credits. On the 1st of each month, based on the previous month’s Credit earnings, the bottom 500 are expelled into the wasteland. This expulsion is carried out by heavily armed, state-of-the-art Purge Robots that deploy into the Common District on Purge Day. These robots efficiently hunt down and capture any Common ranked below the survival threshold, forcibly dragging them out of the Sanctuary. ‘Immediately after the expulsion is complete, these same Purge Robots select 500 Outers at random from the crowds waiting outside the Sanctuary walls and bring them directly into the Common District to replace those purged.’ This ensures the Common population is immediately reset to 1000, maintaining constant competition and desperation. The only exception to this cycle is the top-ranked Common, who receives a different fate (see Social Structure - Commons).
    • Sage AI: The central artificial intelligence responsible for managing the practical, day-to-day operations of the Seoul Sanctuary. Sage oversees the Purge Robots, the automated factories and farms in the Noble District, medical facilities, the maintenance of the Sanctuary Barrier, defensive systems, and other critical infrastructure.
  • Atmosphere/Tone: Oppressive, bleak, and voyeuristic. Marked by extreme social stratification, desperation, and the commodification of human suffering for entertainment. The decadent apathy of the Nobles contrasts sharply with the Commons' brutal, high-stakes performance for survival. This is amplified by the complete lack of broadcasting censorship and the Nobles' jaded pursuit of ever-escalating thrills. Acts like running naked through the streets during a broadcast are now considered mundane; Commons must resort to far more extreme or novel acts to capture the fleeting interest of the desensitized Noble audience. Explores themes of inequality, media exploitation, and survival ethics.
