Bastard: Bastards, known as 'Seoeol(서얼)' during the Joseon dynasty, were offspring of unions between Yangban and commoners (서자Seoja/서녀Seonyo) or between Yangban and Nobi (얼자Eolja/얼녀Eolnyo). Since King Taejong's reign, they faced pervasive social ostracism, barred from taking the Mungwa civil service examination reserved for aristocrats and politicians. Instead, they could only undertake the Mugwa military exam or the Japgwa technician's exam as Jungin, with limited prospects for advancement.
Enduring discrimination, some Seoeol resorted to treason in a bid to subvert societal norms, and individuals like Yu Jagwang briefly achieved power lawfully before facing severe persecution. In the 18th century, King Yeongjo or King Jeongjo issued limited Seoeol-heotong permits, granting them eligibility for promotion to the Senior Third Rank, Dangsanggwan. However, these measures failed to effect substantive change until the twilight of the Joseon era.
Among the most renowned bastards was Hong Gildong, immortalized in Heo Gyun's novel. Notably, systematic discrimination was absent for non-Yangban classes.

Military duty: During the Joseon era, men aged 16 to 60 were obliged to enlist in the military, referred to as Gunyeok (군역).
Jeonggun(정군): comprised frontline soldiers enduring harsh conditions
Bongjok (봉족), Boin (보인): served as reserves, supporting Jeonggun through military tax payments, Gunpo (군포).
Over time, the distinction between Boin and Jeonggun blurred, morphing into a de facto tax on impoverished peasants, precipitating the collapse of civil administration. Initially effective, the Gunyeok system burgeoned, prompting commoners to seek refuge in temples, volunteer as monks, or pay for substitutes (대립, Daerip) to evade military duty.
By the 16th century, Daerip gained official recognition, though its cost escalated, necessitating the 'Jeseungbangryak(제승방략)' system to bolster the military and preserve societal cohesion. Post-Imjin War (1592-1598), the Sok-ogun law(속오법) resulting in exemption of Yangban from military service, maintaining Gunpo as a commoner's burden.
From the 18th century, Gunpo and the social hierarchy faltered, prompting commoners to fabricate noble lineages and ascend to the Yangban. Consequently, a marginalized minority bore the brunt of military taxation, leading to widespread unrest, such as the peasant rebellions of the 19th century.

Guests: In the household of the Yangban, a noble class in Joseon society, hosting guests was a customary practice laden with social and economic significance. Visitors were personally received by the Yangban, who anticipated their arrival with eagerness. The presentation of gifts by guests constituted a lucrative source of income for the host, enriching both parties involved. Moreover, it was incumbent upon the host to reciprocate the generosity of their guests by bestowing gifts of their own and providing lavish hospitality.
Conversely, the lower classes adopted a more informal approach to hospitality akin to modern-day Airbnb arrangements. Travelers seeking accommodation would approach households and request lodging for the night, offering food both as sustenance for themselves and as compensation for their stay. Typically, travelers carried provisions such as rice and soybean sauce for their meals.

Tobacco: Tobacco, known as Dambae (담배) or 'Namcho' (남초) in Joseon, was introduced from Japan during the Imjin War (1592-1598), swiftly permeating society.
The regions of Jinan (진안) in Jeolla-do and Samdeung (삼등) in Pyeongan-do emerged as renowned centers for tobacco cultivation.
Smoking transcended age and gender boundaries, though etiquettes evolved, particularly under the disapproving reign of King Gwanghaegun, where smoking in the presence of elders or superiors became impolitic.
Amidst the late Joseon era, the proliferation of tobacco farming among peasants sparked societal concern, prompting a shift in agricultural practices. Notably, King Jeongjo, an avid smoker, extolled the virtues of tobacco in several essays, contributing to its cultural acceptance.

Merchants: In the socio-economic framework of Joseon, merchants occupied the lowest echelon, labeled as 'Lowest business (말업 Maleop)' in accordance with Confucian principles. Confucian ideology, advocating for stringent economic control, severely constrained commercial endeavors, affording minimal space for mercantile activities.
Guilds: Guilds played a pivotal role in regulating trade. In early Joseon, the primary merchant guild, Sijeon-Sangin (시전상인), represented the capital's merchants in Hanyang. Endowed with 'the privilege of shutting down unregistered vendors' (금난전권), they monopolized the market in Hanyang.
Towards the late Joseon era, the emergence of the Songsang (송상) guild in Songdo (송도, modern-day Gaesong) posed competition to the Mansang (만상) guild of Uiju (의주). Specializing in the lucrative ginseng trade with Qing China, Songsang garnered substantial profits, operating out of establishments known as Songbang (송방).
Meanwhile, Naesang (내상) thrived in Dongnae (동래), Busan, capitalizing on trade with Japan to augment its prosperity.
Gaekju: Functioning as a brokerage agency and medieval bank, Gaekju facilitated business transactions among merchants, provided complimentary warehousing services, and issued promissory notes known as Eoum (어음), a term persisting in contemporary Korean usage. Additionally, Gaekju establishments doubled as taverns and hotels, occasionally catering to the elite with opulent amenities.
Bobusang: In the twilight of the Joseon era, Bobusang emerged as itinerant merchants. Organized within a hierarchical guild structure, each regional division, or Do, boasted branches termed Imbang (임방) or Jeopso (접소). Their formidable political clout rendered them akin to the influential 'Collegia' of the Roman Empire.

The collapse of three key policies, known as the "삼정의 문란," directly impacted the lives of commoners, encompassing land tax (전정, 전세), military tax (군정, 군포), and state grain loans (환곡).
Land tax: The burden originally borne by landowners was shifted onto vulnerable commoners.
Military tax: Societal norms eroded during the late Joseon period, leading to an imbalance where the Yangban population surpassed that of Sangmin, resulting in excessive exemptions and exploitation by tax collectors who manipulated records and exploited commoners through practices.
- Hwanggucheomjeong(황구첨정): resigtering a child as an adult in ledger.
- Baekgoljingpo(백골징포): registering a dead person in ledger.
- Jokjing(족징): imposing taxes on family members to fill vacancies.
- Injing(인징): imposing taxes on neighbors to fill vacancies.
State grain loan system: Initially devised as a welfare mechanism to alleviate springtime famine by loaning grain and recollecting it during harvest, it devolved into a corrupt system, losing sight of its original purpose. Beonjak (번작): tampering with records Jangri (장리): imposing exorbitant interest rates Heoryu (허류): embezzlement.
The collapse of these policies precipitated the downfall of the Joseon dynasty and sparked ongoing rebellions, signifying a systemic failure within the governance structure.

The Sahwa(사화), or Literati purge, denotes four significant purges of Confucian aristocrats during the early Joseon period.
Muo-sahwa (무오사화), occurring in 1498, was instigated by the historian Kim Ilson's contentious record in the 'Veritable Record of the Joseon Dynasty,' which directly challenged the legitimacy of former King Sejo. Kim and a few of his associates, sharing anti-Sejo sentiments, were executed for treason. Despite the controversial nature of Kim's actions, reading his record during King Yeonsangun's reign was deemed subversive.
Gapja-sahwa (갑자사화) of 1504 witnessed the slaughter of over 100 Confucian aristocrats, plunging the royal court into chaos. King Yeonsangun's extreme reaction to minor infractions, such as the delivery of poison by Lee Sejwa to his own mother, and the refusal of Hong Gwidal to marry his granddaughter to the prince, led to a brutal crackdown. Yeonsangun's subsequent descent into tyranny culminated in his overthrow in the coup of 1506.
Gimyosahwa (기묘사화) in 1519 unfolded when Jo Gwangjo and his radical Confucian reformists posed a threat to the Crown. Despite initially supporting Jo, King Joongjong abruptly reversed his stance, arresting and executing Jo's faction. The king's sudden betrayal stunned many aristocrats, despite reservations about Jo's confrontational approach to reform. Jo was posthumously rehabilitated and revered as a saint.
Ulsasahwa (을사사화) of 1545 epitomized a power struggle between Daeyun (대윤, Elder Yun's faction) and Soyun (소윤, Younger Yun's faction). Daeyun was falsely charged with treason and eliminated, though the purge did not extend to 'Daegan,' a Confucian aristocrat of Samsa, unlike the preceding Sahwa incidents.

Geomgye: Geomgye (검계), Joseon's criminal syndicate, first surfaced in historical records during the reign of King Sukjong. True to their name, they constituted a group (Gye, 계) of sword-bearing individuals (Geom, 검), characterized by their overtly antisocial and rebellious objectives. They distinguished themselves by wearing wooden sandals on clear days and ordinary shoes during rainfall, while concealing their identities behind bamboo satgat masks, reserving membership solely for those bearing blade scars.
Renowned crime-fighter Pododaejang Jang Bungik, active during King Yeongjo's reign, vigorously pursued Geomgye, resorting to drastic measures such as severing suspects' Achilles tendons in his quest to eradicate them. In retaliation, Geomgye dispatched an assassin, albeit unsuccessfully, in an attempt on his life.
Ironically, many members of Geomgye were formerly Byeolgam, palace guards who held sway in Joseon's red-light districts. One notable figure, Pyo Cheolju (표철주, 'Iron Staff' Pyo), evaded Jang's clutches, having previously served as a Byeolgam.

Eosa could seize the governor's office for official investigation, and usually it caused total panic. Only a rumor of Eosa's appearance in the region was enough to induce fear and paranoia among governors and officials.

"Bangnap" (방납), known as the "disturbance of tribute," epitomized corruption and profiteering during the Joseon dynasty. While commoners were mandated to provide tributes to the central government, logistical challenges often rendered compliance difficult, especially when the assigned goods were unfamiliar or unavailable locally. Consequently, the emergence of "Bangnap" represented a nefarious business enterprise. Exploiting the predicament of commoners, these intermediaries purchased goods at inflated prices and submitted them to the court on behalf of taxpayers, thus circumventing the rightful assignment to their respective regions.
It led to the development of 'Daedong', a rice-based tax and abolishment of tributary system. Many benevolent rulers and administrators fought for the Daedong-beop, the Daedong system to ease the tax burden of the people. It started from Gyeonggi-do in 1608, and nationally adopted in 1708.
