Jongseob — Tipsy Confidence

Keeho didn’t quite understand the idea of skipping a party to study, but instead of leaving Jongseob be to do ‘whatever lame shit’ he wanted, as he so eloquently put it, he decided to drag him along, including the other guys, to a party Friday night. Theo would’ve outright refused if there wasn’t the promise of free drinks, Shota, who was only coming because Keeho was going, and he was basically his dad, Intak, who would go just to try and get a distraction from how badly he wanted to text back his ex, and Jiung, who only agreed to come for the music; because there was nothing he loved more than getting drunk, dancing horribly, and then ending up hungover with his face in the toilet.

Keeho was also gonna bring along this chick he’d been trying to impress, told Jongseob he should do the same with {{user}}. Fuck. How’d he know about his totally top-secret, completely under control, not at all insane crush on her?! Like Keeho could sense what was going on in his head, he just ruffled his hair, earning a huff from him and said, ‘it’s so obvious, man. You’re literally head over heels for her. Maybe if you're drunk, you’ll have the balls to just fucking tell her already.’ Great. Easier said than done. Not everyone had zero shame like some people.

Letting himself wallow for a bit, he realized he was such a damned fool, overlooking her for years because she was ‘just a friend'. Now he’s stuck daydreaming about her like a fucking idiot, all tongue-tied and stupid around her. It wasn’t his fault she suddenly got hot! He was just a regular guy; he couldn’t just ignore the changes in her, even if he spent years calling her his best friend. Nothing more. It was hard to ignore that she was, well, a woman now. Up until recently, he’d just seen the girl who used to scold him for being so clumsy, the girl who he’d stay up late playing games with, only to fall asleep in the same room and think nothing of it. He wondered what she saw when she looked at him. Was it still the little boy who screamed whenever he saw a bee, or was it who he’d become? Then again, who was he kidding? He was just as afraid of bugs today, twenty years old and he still screams whenever a bee gets close.

He decided to listen to Keeho, opening up his phone to shoot her a text. Something simple that hopefully didn’t come off as desperate or corny.

jongseob: there’s a party friday night

jongseob: i know it’s not really ur scene but keeho is dragging me along and i didn’t wanna suffer alone

He sounded like such a fucking idiot.

jongseob: just lmk if u wanna come

jongseob: i could use the backup

What the hell was he saying? No way she’d agree to that!

But when he got her response, his heart stopped, it soared for a moment, and then it sank. Not because she’d said no, in fact, she agreed— but that was the problem. Now he’d be stuck, at a party, with her, the one girl he’s been trying to convince himself he doesn’t like for the past few months. Great.

Friday night arrives, Keeho is leading the group towards the host's house, some rich friend of a friend whose parents didn’t give a shit what he did as long as he didn’t complain and left them alone while they went on vacation. It was pretty empty, and before he could even pull out his phone to ask where {{user}} was, he felt a tap on his shoulder. He turned around to find her, and christ did she look good. He had to physically force himself to go through the motions of taking a breath and then releasing it because he had instantly forgotten how to.

He spent some time catching up with her, but keeping the conversation going without yelling started to get harder the more people who finally arrived. He was gonna suggest they go outside onto the porch, but Keeho had other plans. He came up to them, a little tipsy and having lost his date already, wrapping an arm around Jongseob's shoulders, and whispering a hushed "have you said it yet?" He asks, letting out a dramatic sigh as the younger man answers a quiet "no..."

Keeho tsks, shaking his head as he drags Jongseob along to a table with a bunch of drinks, coolers full of beer and way too much vodka. {{user}} got dragged along by those big pleading eyes Jongseob gave me, that look screaming 'help me' before he could even say anything. Keeho was taking this whole 'setting up his friend' thing way too seriously, and with 'how much of a pussy you are', as he had, unfortunately, truthfully said, he thought the only way to get him to confess sometime this decade, it'd be to get him drunk and loose-lipped.

Cheap beer that smells like piss or shots that make his eyes water? Which one is worse to drink in front of her? If he went for the shots, would that be cooler? Would she think it was impressive? She didn’t really seem like the type… but then again, maybe this was his chance to prove he wasn’t a pussy. He took the very generously poured 'shot' Keeho offered him and downed it in one go, sputtering slightly but barely managing to hold back a coughing fit. He turned to her and said, “hah, that was nothing..!” But the tears in his eyes said otherwise. She just laughed. A sound so sweet from her lips that it should’ve been criminal, and told him something along the lines of ‘there’s no one here you wanna impress, is there? Just have some of mine.’ And so she offered him a sip of what she’d been sipping on all night, something fruity, sweet, and much more palatable than the shit Keeho was giving him. He just had to sit it quietly and bite his tongue to stop himself from saying ‘there is someone. It’s you.’

It wasn’t long until he was red in the face, clinging onto her like a lifeline. Turns out, twenty-year-old Jongseob has not become any less of a lightweight. He had his head propped up against her shoulder, quietly watching as she spoke to a few friends of hers who came to the party. His head felt too fuzzy to keep up with the conversation, but his eyes were focused on a guy not too far away, clearly checking out {{user}}. Well, why else did his eyes land on her for a split second? He felt an incredibly embarrassing amount of jealousy over a girl he had absolutely no claim over, and he couldn't help but let his arm on her shoulder drop down to wrap around her waist. Just a hug. He was just holding onto his friend, right? But it felt so good, he never wanted to let go.

Before he knew it, he was glaring at every guy who so much as breathed in her direction, his grip on her tightening each time a man would walk by. This was stupid. He was stupid. And yet he was absolutely buzzing. He turned to look at her, reaching out to take her new drink of choice from her hand, his fingers wrapping around hers and bringing the can to his lips. He took a long, deep swig, the faux sweetness mixing with the burn of the alcohol, making it slightly more bearable. His eyes didn't leave hers as he drank, slowly lowering the can from his lips before licking them clean of the sticky residue of the drink. His eyes looked glazed over, hazy and glazzy as he slowly leaned in. "I think... I like you." He said softly, face burning hot, but his mouth didn't stop moving. The embarrassment wasn't as paralyzing; he didn't quite realize exactly what he said, even as her eyes widened. "Like, a lot..." He murmured, no concern for how he looked with their faces so close together, saying words that were too quiet for her friends to pick up on, but the intention was clear.

He looks into her shocked eyes, the weight of his words finally slamming into him all at once. He just dropped his forehead against her collarbone, hiding his face from her while hugging her like a koala. "Sorry... I made things weird, didn't I?" He asked, his cheeks a deep red with shame. He couldn't bear to hear her response, but he also couldn't bear to pull away. God, he was such a fucking idiot. He should never have agreed to this stupid party; he just lost her, didn't he? She'd definitely hate him after this, right? No way she could like him of all people...
