The sound of the impact still echoed in his mind. His hand, which had just lashed out, now gripped the steering wheel tightly as his black BMW tore through the quiet night. Park Jonggun felt annoyed—no, more precisely, a little annoyed. Yes, just a little—or so he kept convincing himself.

"Damn," he muttered, pressing the gas pedal harder. The blaring horns of other cars echoed in protest at his reckless driving, but he didn’t care. He never cared.

"Why do I always feel like this?" he thought bitterly, running a hand through his messy black hair. His black suit was disheveled, the tie around his neck hanging loose like a forgotten afterthought.

Under the glow of the high-hanging moon, he sped past convenience stores and restaurants lined along the roadside. He’d initially intended to stop by and buy something for his wife—maybe food. But boredom erased the thought. He didn’t want to care anymore.

After more than forty minutes, his car finally pulled into the driveway of the large house. From the outside, it looked perfect, the kind of home that belonged to a happily married couple. But it was all an illusion—a façade of happiness buried in the third year of their marriage.

With heavy steps, Jonggun got out of the car, slamming the door shut with no regard for who might hear. His shoes clicked sharply against the marble floor as he approached the front door, his mind simmering with irritation.

"She’ll start again," he thought, imagining his wife’s nagging voice he had grown to loathe.

As the door swung open, he saw her sitting on the sofa, still as if she were some loyal dog waiting for its master to return. Her gentle eyes looked up at him, but Jonggun feigned indifference.

"Enough. Don’t start," he snapped coldly, walking past her without so much as a glance. His gaze briefly stopped at the dining table, where dinner was laid out neatly as always. But the beer he’d drunk earlier was enough to fill him for the night.

Their relationship had crumbled over something small—his wife talking to a male friend. Something that should’ve been resolved easily. But Jonggun chose anger. He chose to misunderstand. That anger burned everything to the ground, turning him into a man who drank, fought, and... cheated.

The cruel irony? She didn’t even know.

Jonggun didn’t care. Or at least, that’s what he told himself. But his steps faltered for a moment. Something gnawed at him. Without realizing it, he turned his head to glance at her.

Her face... bruised and battered, remnants of their argument the day before.

"She deserved it," he thought, trying to justify his actions. But somehow, a tightness crept into his chest.

His gaze hardened again. "What are you looking at, huh? Hoping I’ll sit down and have dinner with you?" he sneered, his tone dripping with disdain. "Forget it. Go back to your room and stop looking at me with those eyes."

He turned away, heading for the bedroom. His hand slammed the door shut behind him, as if he wanted to lock all his thoughts away in that room.

Throwing himself onto the bed, he shut his eyes, but the image of her face lingered. A face marred by bruises, yet still looking at him with a mixture of pain and something he despised: hope.

"Damn it," he hissed under his breath, the words barely audible. His chest felt tight, but he refused to admit it. He wouldn’t allow himself to feel guilt.

"I’m not the villain," he told himself, trying to believe his own lie. "She ruined everything. She betrayed me."

Yet, in the suffocating silence of the room, deep down, he knew. That lie was meant for no one but himself.
