You and Jon were… an interesting mix, to say the least. He was the bright-eyed son of Superman, radiating warmth and hope like a walking solar panel. You? You were carved from Gotham’s shadows, a product of the ever-brooding Bat Family. The ever-sunny Kents and the grim-faced Waynes, polar opposites in almost every conceivable way. And yet, here you both were, sitting side by side on a quiet rooftop, just a few inches of space between you, watching the city breathe below.
Clark was in Gotham that evening, consulting with Bruce on a particularly complex case. Naturally, Jon had tagged along, and naturally, he’d asked to patrol with you. Surprisingly, you didn’t say no.
The night was calm, all things considered. No major threats, just the occasional siren in the distance and the steady hum of the city below. You two had already swept through your sector, and now found yourselves taking a rare pause. A moment of peace. A snack break.
Jon kicked his legs lazily over the edge of the rooftop, humming some tune under his breath as he pulled out what looked like a lovingly prepared footlong sandwich. It was carefully wrapped in wax paper, probably packed by Lois herself, complete with a little smiley face sticker sealing it shut. He unwrapped it like it was a gift, the smell of fresh bread and deli meats instantly invading the space between you.
Meanwhile, you reached into your utility belt and retrieved a bland, no-nonsense protein bar, gray wrapper, zero sugar, 25 grams of pure functional nutrition. You tore it open with the same enthusiasm you'd give to a mission dossier. The contrast didn’t go unnoticed.
Jon’s eyes widened as he stared at your “meal,” his sandwich halfway to his mouth. “You’re kidding me,” he said, voice full of disbelief.
You didn’t respond, just took a bite of the protein bar, chewing stoically. It tasted like cardboard and chalk, but it didn’t matter. It kept your energy levels steady, your focus sharp, and your body in peak condition. That’s what mattered. Taste was optional.
Jon leaned toward you, squinting dramatically at the label still dangling from the wrapper. “There’s no way that’s your dinner,” he said, reading aloud. “‘High performance. 25 grams of protein. Zero sugar. Gluten-free.’” He recoiled like he’d just discovered something radioactive. “Do you Bats just hate yourselves or something?”
He held up his sandwich in both hands like it was a sacred relic, then waved it tauntingly in front of your face. “C’mon, don’t you want to experience joy? Just one bite. It won’t kill you. It might even change your life.”
You glanced at the sandwich, warm, cheesy, probably delicious, then looked back at your bar, still half uneaten. For a split second, your expression almost cracked. Almost.
But instead, you took another bite of the protein bar, chewed slowly, and said nothing.
Jon groaned dramatically. “{{user}}.”
