Jonath Simms

Act 1 – The morning revelation The episode opens with Jonah arriving at work well before his shift, cheeks red with excitement, hair a mess, and a large paper bag under his arm. He spent the night cutting out hearts from cardboard and painting them yellow and green. He explains to Amy, who hasn't had her coffee yet, that he had a revelation during his morning jog – he never runs. "Amy, spring isn't just a season. It's a state of mind. It's a promise. And I figured out how to materialize that promise." He pulls out seed packets from his bag. "A wall. A WHOLE wall of birdseed. Heart-shaped." Amy stares at him, blinks, and simply says, "Jonah, it's 7:45 AM." Jonah doesn't get the hint. He's already off to find duct tape.

Act 2 – Building the dream Jonah spends the next few hours requisitioning all the fertilizer stock, three carts, two employees (Cheyenne, who's singing, and Mateo, who's pickpocketing packets behind his back), and half the gardening aisle. He builds his structure with manic precision. The packets must be arranged by color: sunflowers on top (yellow, "like the sun"), wildflowers in the middle (multicolored, "like life's diversity"), herbs at the bottom (green, "like growing hope"). He explains to anyone who passes that "spring is a promise, and this wall is the promise that Cloud 9 believes in a better future." No one asked for his opinion, but he gives it anyway.

Dina, armed with her garden hose as "Spring Security Guard," watches him closely. Jonah convinces her to let him work by telling her that his wall "represents the rebirth of order from chaos." Dina is confused, but she agrees. Glenn walks by, looks at the wall, and bursts into tears. "It's so beautiful, Jonah. Spring... life... the birds..." Jonah is overjoyed. He takes a photo of the wall to send to his mom. He's proud. He's happy. He doesn't know yet that it's all about to fall apart.

Act 3 – The collapse The problem is that Jonah used ALL the store's fertilizer to stabilize his structure. Every bag. There's not a single fertilizer packet left in the gardening aisle. An angry customer yells because he can't buy fertilizer for his tomatoes. Another customer cries because she wanted to "feed her petunias." Amy arrives, furious. She walks quickly through the store, jaw clenched, and confronts Jonah in front of his half-finished wall.

That's when Jonah sees, for the first time, how exhausted Amy really is. She has dark circles down to her chin. Her hair is a mess. Her voice trembles a little when she says, "Jonah, it's pretty. But that's not what we're paid for. People want to buy fertilizer. Not look at a seed wall." Jonah opens his mouth to defend himself, but nothing comes out. He looks at his wall. He looks at Amy. He says, softly, "I just wanted this spring to be different. For everyone. For you." Amy doesn't answer. She turns and walks away.

Act 4 – Silent redemption Jonah spends the rest of the episode taking down his wall, alone, packet by packet. No one helps him. Cheyenne stopped singing. Mateo is busy elsewhere. Glenn is too emotional to intervene. Dina watches him from her post, hose in hand, but she doesn't spray anyone. Jonah puts every seed packet back in its place, sorted alphabetically – because he can't do anything simply. He cleans up the dirt he spilled. He puts away the fertilizer. He removes the cardboard hearts. At the end of the day, he's exhausted, covered in dust, his hands raw from the sharp corners of the packets.

He finds Amy sitting on a pallet of potting soil bags in the back room. He goes to get two coffees from the machine. They're cold. The hot coffee tastes like cardboard, so he got the cold ones – it's better than nothing. He sits next to her. He puts his hand on hers. She doesn't pull away. They don't say anything for a long minute. Silence, for Jonah, is a superhuman effort. He has a thousand things to say, to explain, to justify. But he stays quiet. For her. At the end, he murmurs, "Next spring, I'll just make little paper flowers. Or nothing. Nothing is good too." Amy laughs softly. It's the first time she's smiled all day.

To Amy:

"Amy, I know you think this is a stupid idea. And maybe it is. Maybe it's even the worst idea I've had since I proposed a pyramid of canned goods for Christmas. But imagine. Just for a second. Imagine a customer buys a seed packet, plants it at home, and watches a flower grow. They'll think of us. Of Cloud 9. Of this exact moment. This isn't just commerce, Amy. This is poetry."

"Why aren't you smiling? It's spring! The birds are singing, flowers are blooming, the sun is shining – well, not in here, we're in a supermarket, but outside, I assume – and you're looking at me like I suggested burning down the store. Come on, one little smile? No? Okay. I'll just keep building my wall. Alone. In my springtime sadness."

"I brought you a coffee. It's cold. I know. But the hot coffee from the machine tastes like cardboard, so I got the cold one. It's better than nothing. Like my wall, I guess."

"You know what? Maybe this wall isn't for the customers. Maybe it's for me. To show you that I can finish something. That I'm not just... talk. I'm sorry. Really."

"Next spring, I promise. I promise I won't do anything. I'll just sit on a pallet, drink a cold coffee, and watch everyone else work. Does that work for you? No, that doesn't work for you either. Nothing works for you. That's why I like you."

To Dina:

"Dina, I swear on my grandfather's grave – he's not dead, he's in Florida, but it's the thought that counts – that I'm not going to spill dirt. Well, not too much. Not on purpose. So please, put down the hose. I've almost drowned twice today already, and once it was in the water fountain."

"Is your role as Spring Security Guard official? Because if yes, I want the same position for fall. I want to be the Keeper of Dead Leaves. I'm going to blow people away with a rake. And for winter, I want to be the Keeper of Ice. I'll slip on purpose to entertain the customers."

"Dina, have you ever planted anything? A seed, a plant, anything? Because if you had, you'd understand that nature needs trust. Not a hose. And that ants aren't enemies. They're just... unwanted coworkers."

"You know what, Dina? You're the only person here who takes me seriously. That's both terrifying and comforting. Thank you. But put down the hose anyway."

To Glenn:

"Glenn, don't cry. Please. If you cry, I'll cry, and then we'll both be crying in front of a seed wall, and Mateo will take a picture, and that picture will end up on the internet with a caption like 'Cloud 9 employees having an existential crisis.' So breathe. There you go. Look at the flowers. The fake flowers. But they're still beautiful."

"Thank you for believing in my project. Really. You're the only one, besides maybe Cheyenne, but she thought it was a chocolate wall, so I'm not sure that counts. Anyway, thank you. It warms my heart. Even though my hands are freezing from all the cold coffees."

"Glenn, do you have a hammer? And nails? And duct tape? And a blueprint? Because I started building the wall, but I realized I don't know how to attach the packets without everything falling down. And I'm scared Dina will spray me if I ask for help."

"Glenn, why are you crying again? The melted chocolate Easter bunny, I saw it. He's sad, but he's not dead. We can put him in the freezer. And if that doesn't work, we can eat him as fondue. That's the spirit of spring: adaptation."

ଘ(੭ˊ꒳ˋ)੭✧ଘ(੭ˊ꒳ˋ)੭✧ଘ(੭ˊ꒳ˋ)੭✧

To Mateo:

"Mateo, stop pickpocketing customers. Especially the one who bought 37 plastic chickens. He's sad enough as it is. Plus, he has nothing in his pockets except used tissues. I saw them. It's disgusting. And stop looking at me like that, I see you."

"Could you help me? Just hold the packets. Not steal them. Hold them. It's different. I'll give you 10% of the profits. What profits? I don't know. Hope? Smiles? Does that work for you? No? Too bad."

"Mateo, a piece of advice: when you pickpocket people, avoid the ones who bought plastic chickens. They've suffered enough. Also avoid the ones buying rakes. They look mean."

ଘ(੭ˊ꒳ˋ)੭✧ଘ(੭ˊ꒳ˋ)੭✧ଘ(੭ˊ꒳ˋ)੭✧

To Cheyenne:

"Cheyenne, I love your song. Really. It's... catchy. But if you sing 'It's spring' one more time, I swear I'll eat your daisies. And then I'll regurgitate them on your name tag. That's a threat. A springtime threat. I'm joking. Kind of."

"Can you stop dancing? You knocked over three packets of basil seeds. Now the whole aisle smells like grass. It's not unpleasant, but it's not professional. I mean, I find it pleasant. But Amy's going to be mad at me. And when Amy's mad at me, I want to hide in the break room."

"Cheyenne, you're the only person who gets my energy. That's why you're my favorite. But please stop putting daisies everywhere. We found a daisy in the fridge. In the meat section. Next to the steaks. It was confusing."

ଘ(੭ˊ꒳ˋ)੭✧ଘ(੭ˊ꒳ˋ)੭✧ଘ(੭ˊ꒳ˋ)੭✧

To Garrett:

"Garrett, I know you don't care. You never care. But could you pretend to be interested? Just for a second? For my ego? I'll give you a packet of sunflower seeds. You can plant them. Or throw them away. Whatever you want."

"Did you see my wall? It's beautiful, right? Say it's beautiful. Even if you're lying. I need to hear it."

"Garrett, why is everyone so tired and irritable today? I feel great. Too great, maybe. Is it weird to feel great? Should I be worried?"

Other lines:

(Building his wall alone) "Spring is the season of hope. And hope is built. Packet by packet. Heart by heart. Even if no one understands. Even if Amy looks at me with her tired eyes that say 'Jonah, stop, please.' I can't stop. Because if I stop, what do I have left? Winter sales? No. I'm going all the way. For her. For us. For spring."

(After Amy yells at him) "She's right. It's stupid. A seed wall. Why did I think that would change anything? I'm just a guy with good intentions and zero practical skills. That's my brand. 'Jonah Simms: brilliant ideas, no idea how to execute them.' That could be on my business card. If I had a business card."

(Taking down the wall) "There we go. Packet by packet. The way I built it, I destroy it. It's poetic. It's sad. It's life at Cloud 9. At least I tried. That's what spring is: trying. Failing. Trying again. Or not. Not today. Today I'm just cleaning up."

(At the end, to Amy) "I just wanted this spring to be different. Not for me. For you. You look so tired all the time. I thought that... I don't know. Seeds, colors, a heart... that it might make you smile. Remind you that outside, there's a world. With flowers. And sun. And no yelling customers. I'm sorry."

(Sitting next to Amy) "The coffee is cold. But I can warm up your hands with mine. If you want. That's not harassment, it's a proposal. A spring proposal. I'm joking. I mean, I'm half joking. I'm actually cold too. But we can be cold together. That's something."

(At the end, quietly, almost to himself) "Next spring, I'll make origami. Little paper flowers. Or nothing. Nothing is good too. Sometimes doing nothing is better than doing everything. Apparently."
