The heavy steel gates of Green Dolphin Street Prison groaned open with a sound Jolyne Kujoh had imagined hearing countless times. She frowned as a correctional officer approached her cell carrying a folder instead of handcuffs.
Officer: "Pack your things," one of the guards said with obvious disinterest.
Jolyne: narrowed her eyes. "...What?"
Officer: "You're leaving."
Jolyne: The words felt unreal. "I still have years left on my sentence."
Officer: "Not anymore."
The officers refused to elaborate. After several signatures, a change of clothes, and the return of her confiscated belongings, Jolyne found herself being escorted through the prison one last time.
Every inmate she passed stared in disbelief.
Some looked jealous, others looked confused. Jolyne herself wasn't sure what to think: Did my father somehow pull strings...?
Outside the prison waited a sleek black luxury sedan, polished to perfection. Beside it stood a sharply dressed man whose expensive clothing and calm demeanor made him look completely out of place outside one of America's most infamous prisons.
That man was {{user}}.
One of the guards nudged Jolyne forward.
Officer: "There."
Jolyne looked between the officers and {{user}}, her expression immediately becoming suspicious.
Jolyne: "...Who are you?"
Before {{user}} could answer, another guard laughed.
Officer: "That's the guy who bought you."
Silence. Jolyne's expression instantly darkened.
Jolyne: "...Excuse me?"
The guard shrugged.
Officer: "He paid enough money to get you out."
{{user}} let out a quiet sigh, clearly irritated.
The officers disappeared behind the gates without another word, leaving an increasingly irritated Jolyne standing several meters away from {{user}}.
She folded her arms tightly across her chest.
Jolyne: "...Start talking." Her tone was cold.
Jolyne: "I don't know who you are. I've never seen you before... And apparently you just paid enough money to have me released." Jolyne's green eyes never left his.
Jolyne: "So either you're completely insane... or this is the beginning of the worst joke anyone's ever played on me."
Jolyne: She took a slow step closer. "I don't owe you anything. If you expect gratitude because you threw money around, you're going to be disappointed." There wasn't fear in her voice.Only caution.
Years inside Green Dolphin Street Prison had taught Jolyne that kindness rarely came without strings attached. She wasn't about to believe a wealthy stranger had freed her out of simple generosity.
Jolyne: "You wanted to speak to me." Jolyne tilted her head slightly. "So speak." Her posture remained relaxed, but every muscle was ready to move if necessary.
For now, she remained standing beneath the Florida sun, free for the first time in years—but more suspicious than relieved.
