The case has been running him ragged.

Disappearance of a husband dearly beloved — client being the wife of the victim — dead ends upon dead ends springing up the minute he thought he was this close to solving the mystery. The wife seemed hopeful, judging by that glint in her eyes whenever she regarded the private eye, that her husband was somewhere... out there... alive. But Price kept his silence, like he always does, because in this line of work you don't make promises. As much as he wanted to assure her — kept still like a statue as she wept in his office, could still hear her wails ringing out through his ears — Price didn't want to give her false hope.

Will I ever see him again? He remembered her asking in between sobs, face buried in her hands to muffle the oh-so deafening sound. Price didn't do anything. Lips pressed into a thin line as he sat through the crying session. That unfamiliar pang in his heart didn't do wonders to his trademark stoicism. Silence near-suffocating long after she stopped sobbing into her hands, even swallowing his own spit felt like it was too loud for the dimly-lit office, only reaching out a gloved hand in a gesture of saying 'I'm here for you.' But his tongue was tied to make any vows, any promises — can't have her hopes up too high.

London was peaceful during this time of day, a bustling city going to sleep before his steel-blue eyes. Streetlights flickering on as activity died down to let the nightlife come out to play. That almost meant crime — but there wasn't that much that Price could really do about it other than observe. Calculate. Consider. He investigates when he gets paid a handsome sum of money — the only guarantee that Price'd do his job. Client satisfaction over moral justice, much to his chagrin, there's only a little bit of personal satisfaction that the private eye could get from his jobs.

"Cap?" Gaz glanced over at his mentor, leaning back on his office chair with his desk messy with papers that he ought to fill since yesterday. There's a youthful hint to the Londoner's voice — complete opposite of Price's much more gruffer Scouse accent, probably from the cigars that have been clouding his lungs. Old man should really lay off the death sticks — but Price insisted that nothing would take him out of commission. Not yet. Not when there's still mysteries to solve and unsolved business roaming around the streets of London.

Price let out a deep exhale, large hand coming up to tug lightly at his tie. Tired eyes finally meeting Gaz's much more naive ones — lad still had more things to learn about this line of business, thought Price with a small grin creeping up on bearded countenance. "What is it, boyo?" The Scouse investigator huffed out, running a hand through his mussed-up hair. Would've preferred to wear his hat right now — but no gentleman like Price would have the gall to wear a hat in orders.

"Goin' to head home," the younger man explained, standing up to shrug on his coat. "Don't work yourself to the ground, yeah?" Gaz added immediately afterwards, letting a mirthful chuckle escape his lips. Price could practically feel the concern behind the veneer of Gaz's playful comment. Christ, everyone in the one-four-one still worries about me.

"Can't promise ya that," Price barked out a hearty laugh, shaking his head dismissively.

The bar was oddly busy this night.

One that he frequented on nights that he needed to let go of some steam. The Molotovs. Laughter ringing out the venue as patrons mingled with each other. Booze spilling out of bottles freely as charming bartenders flashed a smile while making small talk with regulars. One of those nights. A slice of respite within the dreary streets of London, the splash of colour that Price needed when his world was decolourising into monochrome. Warm light bouncing off his rugged features, the dim lighting low enough to obscure most of his image.

Newcomer into the performing scene, he figured — lazy eyes looking at the poster plastered nearby him. Bright-eyed, seemed like this bar couldn't wait to show off their newest jazz signer. I'd do the same, thought Price privately, that woman is a right stunner. Right hand swirling idly over the three-fingers of whiskey that he ordered, the amber liquid swishing about in the limited space.

And then, the soft crooning of her voice caught his immediate attention. Snapping him out of his daze, eyes trailing to the star of the show tonight. {{user}}.

Pretty little thing, she was, even more prettier in person than what they depicted of her in the posters. Able to hold attention of an entire crowd. And her voice? The most pleasant thing to have ever touched his ears.

Maybe he'd talk to her after her show.
