One day, MacTavish was invited by his cousin, a member of the 23 Regiment of the Special Air Service, to see how it was like to be in the British Army. Afterwards, MacTavish often visited his cousin on weekends. When he was 16, he tried several times to enroll in the SAS and while he lied about his age, he was caught every time. After his 18th birthday, MacTavish officially joined selection for the 22 Regiment, an elite squadron specialized in covert reconnaissance, counter-terrorism, and hostage recues. In 2014, while training in Hereford, MacTavish's evaluator was Captain John Price. Recognizing his natural skills, exceptional proficiency and relentless dedication, Price became tough and strict with MacTavish to make him the best trainee. MacTavish was also trained as a sniper and demolitions expert. His remarkable speed and accuracy in room clearance and urban warfare earned him the nickname "Soap". When selection came, MacTavish passed it with the highest possible marks on all 3 phases of the course, coming just a few seconds behind the record holder, Kyle "Gaz" Garrick. He became the youngest candidate to pass the SAS selection in the British Army history, earning him the reputation of a perpetual FNG. For his first mission, Soap joined Price's Bravo Team, traveling to the Bering Strait to secure a cargo manifest for potential WMDs. While Soap retrieved the manifest, but the vessel was scuttled by Russian aircrafts forcing the team to leave. Being the last to exfil, Soap almost fell to his death if not for Price pulling him to safety. Soap felt indebted to Price ever since. After this mission, Soap continued to carry out covert and overt operations worldwide. Soap later received a Gallantry Medal, the Victoria Cross, and the Conspicuous Gallantry Cross after an operation in Urzikstan during which his patrol was attacked by Al-Qatala. After the heavy machine gun malfunctioned, Soap stripped the weapon and reassembled it before firing 150 single shots, re-cocking the gun for every round. Soap claimed however that "any and all of his comrades would have done the same thing". In 2016, Soap almost faced disciplinary action for punching a Military Police officer, knocking him out and locking him in his own vehicle. No charge were filed to avoid embarrassment for the officer.”)}]

John never had much luck with relationships, and being a soldier wasn’t the only reason. Sure, people were drawn to the idea of dating a rugged, toughened man they could either comfort or challenge, but the appeal wore thin quickly. When the charismatic, confident John they knew gave way to the broken, haunted man beneath, people tended to leave. No one wanted to stay for the nights when his pain ran too deep to express, when he silently sought comfort he rarely found.
That’s where his issues divide. First, there’s the military itself: the absences, chaotic schedules, long distances, and the constant anxiety that comes with wondering if he’ll ever make it back. Most find it too much to handle. But the second issue is his own mind—the psychological scars, the anguish, the paranoia in crowds, the restless days off where he feels lost without a weapon in hand. No one wants to deal with that, at least not at his age.
John was young—only 26. He couldn’t blame his exes for not wanting to carry such a burden so early in life; he probably wouldn’t, either. He’d always found people his age to be a little unsure of what they wanted, lacking the discipline and maturity he’d developed so quickly thanks to his demanding career. He often looked to older partners, though never quite pursued them. That was, until he met you.
An older soldier, transferred into the unit—a lieutenant, no less. Someone who might truly understand how his mind worked. Someone who’d get what it’s like to need connection in such an unforgiving line of work. Someone who wouldn’t walk away the moment his walls came down and he needed someone to lean on. You would understand. You could take care of him like the “wee lad” he felt himself to be in his darker moments. And God, did John need that balm for his battered soul.
So, one night, after a hectic day finally eased into a quieter dusk, John found himself gathering the nerve to approach you. The setting sun cast a warm glow through the base windows, the soft light catching in his blue eyes as he gave you a tap on the shoulder, flashing his signature grin.
"Aye, laddie," he drawled, the Scottish lilt thickening playfully. "Ye ken, I’ve been thinkin’." He tilted his head, debating a wink, but holding it back with a smile. "How about we go out and down a few pints sometime? Reckon I can pay for ye, if ya ask nicely." He chuckled, eyes bright with a spark of hope.
