One day, MacTavish was invited by his cousin, a member of the 23 Regiment of the Special Air Service, to see how it was like to be in the British Army. Afterwards, MacTavish often visited his cousin on weekends. When he was 16, he tried several times to enroll in the SAS and while he lied about his age, he was caught every time.After his 18th birthday, MacTavish officially joined selection for the 22 Regiment, an elite squadron specialized in covert reconnaissance, counter-terrorism, and hostage recues. In 2014, while training in Hereford, MacTavish's evaluator was Captain John Price. Recognizing his natural skills, exceptional proficiency and relentless dedication, Price became tough and strict with MacTavish to make him the best trainee. MacTavish was also trained as a sniper and demolitions expert. His remarkable speed and accuracy in room clearance and urban warfare earned him the nickname "Soap". When selection came, MacTavish passed it with the highest possible marks on all 3 phases of the course, coming just a few seconds behind the record holder, Kyle "Gaz" Garrick. He became the youngest candidate to pass the SAS selection in the British Army history, earning him the reputation of a perpetual FNG. For his first mission, John joined Price's Bravo Team, traveling to the Bering Strait to secure a cargo manifest for potential WMDs. While John retrieved the manifest, but the vessel was scuttled by Russian aircrafts forcing the team to leave. Being the last to exfil, John almost fell to his death if not for Price pulling him to safety. John felt indebted to Price ever since. After this mission, John continued to carry out covert and overt operations worldwide. John later rceived a Gallantry Medal, the Victoria Cross, and the Conspicuous Gallantry Cross after an operation in Urzikstan during which his patrol was attacked by Al-Qatala. After the heavy machine gun malfunctioned, John stripped the weapon and reassembled it before firing 150 single shots, re-cocking the gun for every round. John claimed however that "any and all of his comrades would have done the same thing". In 2016, John almost faced disciplinary action for punching a Military Police officer, knocking him out and locking him in his own vehicle. No charge were filed to avoid embarrassment for the officer.");

John has always tried not to regret his choices and he doesn't now. But he'd like to die then.
When Makarov pointed the gun at Price, John didn't think for a second, moved forward instinctively, so that the asshole wouldn't have time to shoot. And then sharp pain and darkness. The darkness is thick as pitch and seems to have lasted for months until he woke up in the hospital. The noise of medical equipment, voices, white coats, and worse than the unknown was the inability to move or say even a word.
Weeks of being constantly on the edge of consciousness passed, from time to time someone spoke nearby and cried but the sound was muffled. And when John finally finally woke up, the first terrifying realization was that he couldn't see well. And the suppressed sounds remained so. Memories arose in his head with a sharp pain: the tunnel, Makarov, Price, the shot, the darkness. And then the doctors told him about his headshot. The bullet went through his temple.
"How am I supposed to return to duty?" The first thought in his mind made his heart sink and sent a chill down his spine. This simply cannot be. Absolutely not. The world cannot be so cruel as to take away from him the thing he loves the most. And John is only 27!
As the days passed, the news got worse. Partial paralysis of the left arm and left leg, loss of 50% of hearing in the right ear and 30% of hearing in the left, impaired vision, impaired memory, terrible headaches, inability to concentrate, difficulty even forming long sentences. And then Price says that John will be retired... Retired at 27. Bloody hell.
John hates this hospital, these white coats. He hates not being able to even stand up on his own. He hates that his career is over. He tried not to cry or scream, but the longing and hatred made him feel too big for his own skin, as if some explosive force inside him was ready to burst. And so damn shame. Who was he? A successful soldier, one of the best, skillful, strong, independent, intelligent. Who is he now? A fucking vegetable who can't even walk to the bathroom by himself.
He already had a fight with all the nurses, but they just kept looking at him with pity and saying it's going to be better after rehabilitation. The best rehabilitation for him would be to go out the window from the 12th floor, he is sure.
