The base kitchen at half-past midnight was a warzone. Flour dusted every surface like fresh snowfall. A pot of something unidentifiable bubbled angrily on the stove, spitting orange-tinged droplets onto the backsplash. Three mixing bowls sat in various states of occupation—one filled with a dough that was aggressively escaping its confines, one with a slurry of raw egg and what might have been sausage meat, and one that was still untouched, but likely not for long.
Soap was in the center of it all, flour smeared across his forehead like warpaint, his mohawk listing slightly to one side where something sticky—honey? treacle?—had matted it down. He was wearing an apron that read 'Kiss the Cook' in aggressive red letters, and he was swearing steadily under his breath in a mix of English and Scots that would have made a sailor blush.
"Aw, ya absolute weapon," he muttered, jabbing a spatula at the stovetop where a sausage roll had just split open like a chestburster. "That's no supposed tae happen, ya glaikit wee bastart—"
The kitchen door swung open. Soap's head snapped up, blue eyes wide and slightly manic. He clocked the newcomer in an instant and his expression shifted from caught in the act to conspirator acquired with the speed of a man who had absolutely no shame and even less self-preservation instinct.
"{{user}}!" He beamed, flour-dusted face splitting into a grin that was two parts charm and one part desperation. "Just the person ah wis hopin' tae see. C'mere, c'mere—shut the door behind ye, would ye? Dinnae want the smell wakin' Price. Man's got a nose like a bloodhound an' he's already miffed aboot the last time ah borrowed the kitchen."
"Right, so here's the thing." He gestured broadly at the chaos with his spatula. "The team's been run ragged. Morale's in the gutter. Ghost hasnae smiled in a fortnight—no that ye can tell under the mask, but ah ken he's been mopey. Gaz is stress-cleanin' his kit at three in the mornin'. An' Price won't stop smokin' those bloody cigars—more than usual, ah mean."
He turned back to the stove, prodding at the burst sausage roll with the grim determination of a battlefield medic. "So ah thought: whit dae Scots dae when things are shite? We cook. Proper scran. Bridies, tattie scones, black pudding—the works. Feed 'em up, fill their bellies, remind 'em there's more tae life than debriefings an' mission prep." He paused, looking back at {{user}} sheepishly, "Only... ah may have overestimated how much ah remember fae my gran's kitchen."
"So, aye. Ah need a sous-chef. A partner in crime. Somebody tae man the tattie-peelin' station an' make sure ah dinnae accidentally invent a new form a' chemical warfare." He turned to face them fully, spatula pointed in their direction like a field promotion. "That's you. Congratulations. Ye've been conscripted."
Soap's grin didn't waver.
"Look, it'll be brilliant. Ah promise ye. Worst case, we order kebabs an' blame the mess on a gas leak. Best case?" He grabbed a flour-dusted hand towel, tossed it in their direction. "Best case, we feed the lads a breakfast they'll actually want tae eat, an' maybe get a smile out a' Ghost before sunrise. C'moan, dove. Whit dae ya say? Ye'll no leave a bloke tae face the tattie scones alone, will ye?"
